Eddie's Wheels

Hi,

I've been doing lots of online research on getting a wheelchair/cart for my dog (to help with rear leg weakness). I have decided on Eddie's Wheels. I completed the order form yesterday and I'm just waiting for them to call me to complete my order.

I haven't paid yet, but I just wanted to put the order in since these carts are custom made and can take up to 2 weeks to make. Does anyone have any experience with this company? Or know someone who does? It seems as though it's a great cart and very simple to use (I don't want to spend 30 minutes putting Sawyer into the cart before each walk). This one seems to take no time at all to put her into it. I just hope I took all 7 of the measurements correctly, as that is VERY important with custom made wheelchairs. I checked myself 5 times.

Anyone feedback on this company/wheelchair would be very appreciated.

Thank you.

Eddie's Wheels is great! I worked for a vet that specialized in orthopedic and neurological issues and we had many clients that ended up getting wheel chairs for their pets. Eddie's was the closest and so they tended to go there. We only heard good things about them and they were wonderful about helping people adjust their carts to get the perfect fit.

Oh great! Thank you so much! I had a great feeling about them, and now I'm sold.

I also just got off the phone with my friend who had a boxer with degenerative myelopathy, and when she was considering a cart she spoke to the woman there (Leslie), and she loved her! Anyway, she recalls that they have a person in Manhattan (only 15 minutes from me) who does measurements for you. Since I am afraid I did the measurements incorrectly, I will see if I can go to her or if she can come to me.

Thanks so much for your input! MUCH appreciated.

When they call you to review details and measurements they'll let you know the lead time. I ordered right after a major AP story on them hit the wires and they were backlogged so it took longer - 4 weeks at least. You can upgrade shipping to cut down delivery transit by a few days. Good people, good product, you chose well. I will say that if your dog is long legged, the in and out is a litte more challenging. But as far as the measurements, you should be ok. You can make some adjustments with a little tool they provided. It's a nicely designed cart. Hope it helps your pup.

Thanks Cynthia. Sawyer is a labrador, so I'm not sure if that's considered "long legged" or not. She's only 75 lbs, so I'm thinking her legs are not too long. Either way, I'm sold!

What I worried about in terms of the measurements was that they said that 2 of the measurements were extremely important to have exactly right, because those areas are welded and cannot be adjusted. So I hope I will be able to have a representative do the measurements for Sawyer. I'm sure they are closed on the weekends, so I hope to hear back from them by tomorrow - I'm so anxious to get her walking again and to have them start on the cart!

I will update with pictures and info on how helpful the cart is.

DD2 ordered from Eddie's Wheels for her three legged pit bull. Her front leg is missing (hit by car before she adopted her) but she gained enough strength that she doesn't even use it!

DD2 talked to the owner's of EWheel's before ordering. They suggested she take dog to vet for measuring just in case. That's great if the lady can meet with you.

    Good luck.

Oh, if your dog is missing a front leg, be sure to hold on to the handle of the Wheels good because the first thing DD2's dog did was flip forward since her weight was pushing forward!

Thanks for your input. No, my dog isn't missing a front leg - she has rear leg paresis. I actually completed my order on the phone on Monday, and the woman I spoke with told me that my measurements seemed fine for my dog's weight, etc. She made some small adjustments, but I trust her since she's been doing this for 20 years!

I can't wait to get the wheelchair (I'm guaranteed to get it within 2 weeks from the date or order). I feel like my dog will get her life back. She only goes out to pee/poop since it is so difficult for her to walk, but when she gets the wheelchair she'll actually be able to go for long walks again!

Oh, and I also ordered custom made booties since the other sets I have don't fit her right, and it hinders her walking ability even more. I will update on how those are and will post a link to the site if anyone requests it.

I completely forgot to update about the wheelchair I got for Sawyer. The measurements were spot on (I was so worried about that!), and it took her 2 days to get completely used to it. It is such an amazing wheelchair...very durable. It also takes less than a minute to put her into it, which is great. This has given Sawyer a new life! She runs and fetches again...I couldn't be happier.

    Here is Sawyer pre-cart:

Here is a video that was taken a couple of days after getting the cart (video shot from a balcony, that's why it's a top view):

And a short video that shows her close up in the cart:

Hopefully the videos showed up...I can't preview them because my work computer doesn't let me. I'll fix later if need be.

Ok...just noticed that the videos didn't go through. Let me try again. This time I'll have to just put links, since embedding the video directly onto here isn't working.

gabro14, when I copy your link and paste it in the address box, I get nothing. Then I decided to go into Photobucket.com and paste it there, but it says it doesn't find it. Is there a trick to opening these links?

Wow...can't understand why this isn't working. Ok, let me try another way. I'll put each one in a link below (in 3 separate posts).

If they don't work and you'd like to see them, just let me know and I'll send them to your email addy (I know how to do it that way!).

Below is the first video (before she got the cart)..

Does the wheelchair collapse where she can sit down? Is there a way to lay down with it on?
I have a 5 week old puppy with a spinal cord injury. He's very active and scoots all over the place. Bouncing around on his hiney keeps that area sore so am trying to find something for Scooter.

    Lynn,

No, it doesn't collapse, and therefore the dog cannot sit or lie down while in it. However, if Scooter is small (like a doxie or corgie), then he will be able to lie down while in the wheelchair...most of his body would be on his pet bed and the wheels are therefore able to rest a level down - on the floor. Hope that makes sense.

If your dog is bigger, then I'd recommend getting a sack (not sure of the actual name) for when he's in the house. It goes around the bottom part of his body to give protection from developing sores when scooting around. I think I saw it at handicappedpets.com.

So sorry that you have to deal with this with such a young pup.

I found the website that has the sack thing I was talking about in the above post, to avoid sores from dragging. The link is at the bottom. Too bad it's only for dogs that are less than 40lbs...I might need to get one someday, and my dog is about 75 pounds.

Wow, Sawyer looks SO happy once she got her wheelchair. She looks like a brand-new dog, being able to do everything she used to do. What an amazing difference. Sawyer is a very lucky girl!

Thanks so much Meghane. You have been so helpful through all of this - so YOU are a big reason why Sawyer is so happy!

She'll be 11 years old in about a month...but she seems to get younger each year :)

Wow- what good parents you are! Your dog looks happy now- and healthier because she gets activity!
I worry alot about back injuries, as I have a miniature dachshund. I lost her 1/2 sister because nothing could be done, and bowel/bladder were involved. Now there is Eddie's wheels- they either did not exist then,or I could not find a place to get a chair- they were over $2,000 then.
I hope I won't need one- butI ee how happy your dog is, and if needed know where to go now.
    Thanks for th update.

    Thank you :)

Yes, dachshunds and corgies are very prone to spinal injury. But I wouldn't worry unless you have to...but at least you know their are great wheels out there for very little money (can you believe how inexpensive they are for the quality? I would've thought it would cost $2,000!!) So sorry about her 1/2 sister...that's so sad. Sawyer's bladder and bowel are involved also (bowel incontinence and urine leakage - she cannot urinate on her own, so I have to express her bladder..and as a result she gets many UTI's). It's a very difficult thing to handle, but we have it under control - just hoping she doesn't get kidney problems...we take her to the vet for bloods and urinalysis/culture every 2-3 months to check her kidney function and UTI status.

Meghane, if you see this, what do you think about Nitrofurin (I think that's what it's called). Sawyer has been on it long term, and it seems to be helping with the UTI's. I can't get rid of this leakage though! She's on Proin 50mg BID and some other herbal med for incontinence. Any thoughts?
