Looks like snow! Also, seems to have some stuck to his lips.

If its not snow maybe mange? Really cute face.

That is a very serious medical condition (extreme need for pinched cheeks). He needs to see me immediately.

    on top of his head?

Looks like road salt to me. I've got that all over the place right now, shoes, coats, dogs, floors

    Thank you all!
I wish it was snow or road salt, believe me it's skin deep, ....it's a skin problem as stated above.

We had him at the vet for the second time, first time he figured the dog was allergic to the dog food so he
made us to change,....this was a few month ago, now the vet thinks he is high on thyroid and on a blood test now.

    Meghane,
Vetenarian bills are high as it is.., I don't think I can come from Edmonton to see you.
Can you be more specific on this.. (extreme need for pinched cheeks)?

Sorry, about your pup. Thought you were trying to show us a cute picture. I think Meghane was just wanting to pinch his cheeks.

My son's dog has those big jowls. And when you give her a "cookie," she takes it so daintily.

Sorry, no help. But I think I would get another vet's opinion. Or see if you have a Vet school that might give you insight on who to see or possibly call.

Good luck with your big boy.

My SIL's Shar Pei had very similar skin issues. Sweet dog.

Anyway they were able to minimize the hair loss using allergy meds and a special diet. They never were able to completely get rid of all the bald spots. Sometimes her coat would fill in and look nice, but then you could tell when her allergies were acting up, and she have those tiny bald spots all over her body...

In the summer time she would get considerably worse on her hind quarters and the Vet figured it was grass or bugs on the grass that were irritating her allergies.

I know they spend a lot of money on various tests for skin diseases and allergies. They were able to make significant improvements with food changes and some other changes (minimizing exposure to household cleansers on the floors - stopped their lawn service - no lawn chemicals etc.)

As she got older, she lost most of her wrinkles and if her allergies were acting up she'd loose a lot of hair. When they moved into a new neighborhood, with an old bald dog, they were known as the family with the weird dog. With no wrinkles and no hair, her breed was unrecognizable. And she would sit on guard, like Shar Pei's do... and she would look like a statue in the yard. If you hadn't loved her for years, you would think she was very scary...

When our female dog got sick, they didn't know what was wrong and finally our vet went on the vet board and asked what she had, gave the symptoms to the site that the vet training hospital in the maritimes has and they told him immediately what she had.

So, maybe ask your vet to do that and they might be able to tell your vet what it is and what to do.

Sounds like it might have a high sensitivity to whatever is in the foods given.

You might have to do what other owners have done.
One dog owner started her own dog treat company on the Gulf Islands, our male dog loved her treats tons and tons and then she moved to the main land and we don't see her treats anymore, too bad. But her dog had sensitivities and she made her own treats for it to have.

Poor puppy, its so hard when they have those problems.

What a cutie, beautiful colour it is.

Thank you so much for your concern and help!
Blood test came back and Vet said it's
Hypothyroidism....so I guess he is low.
He is on pills now and we'll see results
in some weeks, I'll have your advise for
    a back up plan.
Keep you posted on how it goes.

    >>That is a very serious medical condition (extreme need for pinched cheeks). He needs to see me immediately.I really didn't get it,...perhaps you Meghane, a future Vetenarian can share this with your colleges and give me better advise.

    Here a close up picture...

Does it itch? Is it just patchy hair loss, or enflamed?

    Thank you Elly!

No, it doesn't itch, just rough skin also feels hard.

    maybe its diet,

try Orijen,Innova EVO or something of similar nature

    or switch to raw.

My dog had slight hypothyroidism and was put on some pills (I think they were homeopathic - called Thytrophin PMG). But then it somehow got better and she is no longer on meds (I guess because it was so mild). She had spots of hair loss and some spots like your dog has. I'm sure your dog will improve with meds.

If you are wondering what Meghane meant by what she said ("That is a very serious medical condition (extreme need for pinched cheeks). He needs to see me immediately."), it was a JOKE! Meaning your dog is really cute and needs his cheeks pinched. Hope it makes sense now. By the way, Meghane doesn't need to share anything with her colleagues, like you asked - she is VERY smart and can give you advice on her own :)

Runs, this condition is not allergies and food has nothing to do with it...it's hypothyroidism, like OP said.

    I know it was a joke-that!

but the "snow" thing on her head is strange- I've never seen that on a dog before. I hope you can cure it. I know Moms dogs skin issues were fired up by grains- so I thought this was "the root" of the issue.

    Thank you all!

    >>. By the way, Meghane doesn't need to share anything with her colleagues, like you asked - she is VERY smart and can give you advice on her own :)I know this....never said she has to,... we can do whatever we want, if she doesn't know what's wrong with this
dog it would only makes sense to share and if she knows and doesn't want to tell then she should never post I.M.O.

    Konrad,

I think there has been something lost in translation. First, I was trying to be helpful and tell you that that Meghane was just saying your dog was cute...I guess you're upset by it?? Why, I'm not sure.

And yes, you did ask her to share the info with her colleagues (you said "perhaps you Meghane, a future Vetenarian can share this with your colleges and give me better advise"). That was quite rude. Meghane wasn't giving advice, she was joking with you. Either way, who are you to say she has to give you FREE advice?

"and if she knows and doesn't want to tell then she should never post I.M.O." - so she's not allowed to post unless she gives medical information and definite diagnoses? Do you think she is the resident veterinarian here? No, she just happens to be a veterinarian who posts on this forum.
