Valances- rod vs. cornice

I have tab-top valances for my baby's nursery and some coordinating black-out panels for the windows. I initially bought 2 double rods with finials, which I just realized won't work because there is only 4 inches between window and wall on one side. I returned to BBB and found some decorative doubles without finials, but they are super heavy, and I'm not really sure "go" in a nursery. There's also a cool rod at BBB called the Umbra Twilight (which I have in my boys' room) and it kind of wraps around the side of the window and allows you to tuck in a panel to the side, which works really well for blocking light. I'd like to use those, but I have these stupid valances, which do add some fun color to the room.

Is there any way to get around a decorative double rod when you have tab-top valances? I thought about maybe sewing the tabs to the back of the valance so they would be hidden rod pockets, or opening the side seams and just using as a rod pocket, or even making a foam core cornice and using my valance for the fabric (but I don't think that would work too well). Either way, it would be annoying work for me.

Are there any other options that anyone can see?
