Cat not eating

This is my 1st cat so there's lots I don't know about them. She's 3 1/2 and only eating a couple of bites a day for the past several days. Otherwise she seems fine, drinks water. I'm thinking I've read that cats can't go for long without eating, is this correct? I'm used to my small dog going for 3-4 days without eating if her tummy doesn't feel good so I don't worry about her but I'm not sure about the cat. I can take her to the vet tomorrow but wanted an opinion from someone that knows more than I do about cats. Thanks.

Take her to the vet. Not eating is one of the first signs that something is wrong.

I didn't realize my cat wasn't eating (the other cat was eating her food), and she almost died. Cats and their eating habits are one of those things that you need to watch closely.

Any change in behavior is reason to visit the vet. Cats don't show symptoms except for lack of appetite, urinary/stool differences, and/or enervation, and by the time they show symptoms, they are already sick. Waiting can kill them.

Thanks rivkadr and elly for your quick response. That's what I 'thought' I remembered. She will be going to the vet tomorrow.

Good but be wary about vet foods, most of them have lots of by products and grains- Cats are Carnivores, 100%, i'd recomand Innova EVO, Orijen or wellness grain free, Natures gate, and ziwi peak are also good.

    How old is your cat?

Good luck with your cat! Let us know what happens!

Oh look. Someone mentioned the word cat, so runsnwalken has to make their patented speech about proper cat food. Do you have that sentence saved somewhere so you can copy and paste it into every thread?

Yes, I'm being snide. Just getting reeeallly sick of seeing posts by a certain someone in every single friggin' thread about cats that have absolutely nothing to do with the subject at hand.

gajopa, good luck at the vet tomorrow. I hope that it's nothing major.

Ditto, rivkadr, I too get sick of seeing the same old response. Any more I tend to skip right over runsnwalken's posts because he posts the same thing over and over, regardless of the subject. The OP asks a question about their cat NOT eating and runsnwalken proceeds to lecture about proper nutrition. Contributes nothing to the conversation except the same old weary diatribe.

A cat that doesn't eat has something wrong health wise, true?. We all know that, right?

Why not while your at it, give info on good food. It makes perfect sense.

    It makes perfect sense.

Maybe to you. I think a good number of us just see it as spam...as we've been trying to tell you over and over. But you keep ignoring it. Frankly, I'm going to start reporting you to the site staff as a spammer/troll if you keep posting comments that have nothing to do with the subject at hand.

I took KiKi to the vet this afternoon. Her temp was 101.8. I asked what normal was for a cat and she said cats temp vary. She had lost a pound from her normal weight of 7 pounds. Also said she has gas. She gave her an antibiotic injection and liquid for me to give her. If she's not eating by Monday I will take her back for bloodwork to see exactly what the problem is.

Thanks again for the info and your concern.

101.8 is normal, but losing a pound isn't.

I recommend offering very enticing food, with added water (for hydration). Cats love Fancy Feast, and the smellier (like fish) the better. When they are sick, they get worse for inappetance, so it's good to get them to eat anything.

    Keep us posted.

Oh dear. A pound of weight loss, from a 7 pound cat -- that's quite a lot. I'm surprised your vet didn't push harder for bloodwork immediately.

I agree with elly -- the important thing is getting some food in her. Most cats like wet food (mine don't, but they're weird), so as Elly says, try some nice fishy food. At this point, do whatever you can to get some food (and water) into her.

I'll send positive thoughts your way over the weekend.

Just wanted to let you know that KiKi has been eating normal again, both wet and dry food. We had spaghetti for dinner and she even wanted some of it. I've even been able to give her antibiotic without much trouble, my first time having to give her meds. Maybe she just had an $87 tummy ache. Thanks again for your concern.
