Rug advice needed

12 years ago

We recently installed hardwood in our living/dining room, and I have been having the hardest time deciding on area rugs. I've always had wall to wall carpet, and I don't want to mess this decision up and feel I have to live with my mistake for a long time.

Before, the floor was a sea of blue carpet, which we are so happy is gone!

Here's what the room looks like now.

We have 3 small kids and tend to be quite messy, so I think that indoor/outdoor rugs is one of my limitations. Since our house is fairly small (1500 sq ft), this is our main living space and we do most everything in this room.

I've noticed that I am drawn to pictures online of living rooms with neutral, grass looking rugs. I also like aqua, and hope to use it as one of the colors in the room, but I am afraid of adding back too much blue after living with that carpet! : )

We are still defining our style, but I think we are attempting is a vintage, cottagey but not too cutesy vibe. We redid our kitchen a couple years ago, and I think it captures how we want our home to feel.

Some things that will also be changing soon are the sofa (from beige leather to white slipcovered ikea ektorp, possibly with beige or navy velvet slipcovers as well), the tv console (probably a white one), and the beige recliner is going to go away and be replaced by the matching orange velvet wing chair. The dining room table is in rough shape, and I'm keeping my eye out for a new one on cl. If I don't find one soon, I will gel stain the top dark and paint the base and chairs white. Also, the small ottoman will get recovered or moved out, and either a fabric or leather ottoman will double as a new coffee table.

Here are a few more pics of the space:

I bought a few rugs in small sizes to try out. Here are the main 2 contenders for the living room area:

I really liked the chevron seagrass looking one. It is rough, but feels realistic. I like the feel of the pattern, but I'm worried that I will get tired of it and chevron is too trendy.

The rest of my family likes this jute looking one. It is much softer, and I do like it too I just wonder if it's too blah. I think it is darker than it looks on the homedecorator website.

For the dining room area, here are the 2 I tried out.

I like this one, but I'm concerned it's a little too cutesy. I never knew how picky I was about rugs!

This one we didn't like at all in the room, and I thought I'd love it. In our space, it looks dark and sucks the light out of the room.

Here are a few others that I thought as possibilities for the dining table:

I'd love to hear any opinions on the rugs I'm already thinking about, as well as other possibilities or ideas you might have to help us with this space. Thanks!!

    I really like the last one for your LR area. Brings in a little bit of blue and has the orange of you wing chair, but is not overly vivid.

    I also like that last one for your living room, but I would probably not put any in the dining room.
    Love the new floors.

    I like the last one quite a bit too. But one thing I didn't mention is that it is way more expensive than the others. The 8x10 size is on sale for $431 (reg $539) + $100 shipping, which to me is quite a bit for an indoor/outdoor rug. So I need to really decide if it's "the one", and then wonder if I should go with wool instead at that price.

    lyban, thanks! One problem we're having with the table is that it's sliding all over the place when we eat now. The main culprit is my 5 yr old. We thought a rug would help stabilize the area.

    I really love your new kitchen and your new wood flooring!

    What is the wall color in your kitchen (around the window with the fabric shade) behind the island? Is that the same color on the walls around your dining table?

    The print fabric in your kitchen window shade is nice. Is that red in the fabric or a very deep orange?

    How about the solid under the dining table and the last one for your living room.
    As per the dining room, by using indoor/outdoor you could probably hose it off every so often to keep it clean.

    Funny, I just posted this rug on someone else's thread.

    I'm in love with Dash and Albert rugs. They have a great indoor/outdoor line - and I have one in my office. It is thin, and I need a rug pad under it. But it's surprisingly soft.

    This is $500 for an 8.5x11.

    You should check out the Dash & Albert website and search their indoor/outdoor rug section. They have some great, fun patterns.

    Hi, I really like the last one but would like it more if it all were a darker colorful pattern that would camouflage accidents. I can’t help but have a practical side (sorry) due to the fact that when my kids were young replacing area rugs often due to young kid stains wasn’t an option. There are many nice looking rugs out there that could bring in the look you seek where you wouldn’t have to freak at every new permanent stain.

    I think as much as I like the last one I linked, I am going to have to cross it off my list. It's just too much, as I think about it more.

    laurie,
    Thanks! The kitchen walls are sw sea salt. It's a very soft aqua/green/gray. A close color that I almost went with was sw rainwashed, which is amazing too. The shade is red.

    Janice, I do like the rugs on dash and albert. But I think that they're just too pricey for me right now.

    terrilynn, I totally know what you mean about trying to be practical. I am trying to strike that balance of attempting a pulled together room with some grown up sensibilities and having a plastic fisher price palate as my main decorating style - one that I worked for years! : )

    I'm probably being silly, but I just think that I really want a natural looking fiber rug in the living room. I started realizing that pretty much every pic I pin has one, which has led me to that direction. I've read so many negatives on their lack of wear-ability and not handling spills that I'm scared away from real ones though.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

    Have you looked at Overstock?

    This one is 143.00 for an 8x11
    {{gwi:1630304}}

    199.00
    {{gwi:1630306}}

    175.00
    {{gwi:1630308}}

    There are plenty of other indoor/outdoor rugs, too.

    Here's another that would lend itself to your room. Having a solid is probably not a good idea with three small children. Complicated patterns are so forgiving of stains, spills etc. Overstock is only 2.95 for shipping on all items.

    I don't think you're being silly. I also really like the look of natural fiber rugs. Have you looked at the Savannah Indoor-Outdoor rug at Crate and Barrel. Not too expensive, soft, and it cleans up great and looks very much like a natural fiber rug but without all the hassle.

    If you are going to put a rug under your dining table, I'd look at indoor-outdoor and wool. Those both clean up the best in my experience. I have had sisal and cotton and those were a pain. Right now I don't have anything because wood is by far the easiest to clean!

    nosoccermom - I really like #2 & #3 of your suggestions and debated about including them on my original post. I have looked at overstock for hours for rugs...the main thing that made me cautious about them was the color inconsistencies people commented about in their reviews. I was especially scared of rugs with no reviews.

    yaya, I do like that one! I can't fit an 8x11 though due to the angled wall fireplace....I taped out all the possible rug scenarios a few weeks ago

    geokid - I think you found me a winner! I love the light crate & barrel one! I have actually looked on their website several times and always passed that one over...thanks for showing me a better pic of it! I have a c&b not that far away, so I can probably get it in person as well.

    I started out looking at wool rugs and would love to eventually have them. I cloth diapered my youngest and got really into knitting and wool, which is so durable and water resistant as a diaper cover.
    Completely ot, but here is my favorite ever wool pic:

    I am leaning towards this rug for the dining room:

    I have seen it in different colors/sizes on overstock and loved it, and I finally found it in blue in the right size. I think it will brighten up the table as well as tie in to the damask in the kitchen. It's also an indoor/outdoor one.

    Cute baby! That's a pretty rug, but there's a lot of solid beige on it, which doesn't hide stains well. Will it clean easily?

    I haven't read through all of the posts, so forgive me if this is a repeat suggestion, but you can easily find things that you stick to the bottom of the legs of your table to keep it from sliding. They also have them for sofas, chairs. I would agree that you don't want a rug under the dining room table. Especially with little children.
