forum addiction

Just wondering I know there are lots of us addicts here, but is anyone else on off and on all through the day like me? First thing in the am, then mid morning, late morning, noon, mid afternoon... until bed time. Get my drift?

Do I need to seek intervention and who of you will come with me?

    Me!! Me!! Me!!

    Always checking in here ......

BUT do you tell other people about this forum --- or keep it to yourselves??? LOL!

Sign me up! I've even tried cutting off the computer so I won't take the time to start it back up again, but alas, that didn't work.

I jump from the garden section to decorating to conversations even to the health part (as my big bottom grows bigger and bigger, sitting here!!)

I kind of keep it to myself, because people look at me funny when I talk about my forums!!!

I call it a soft addiction but for me it's also, procrastination; I check in and out during the day, rarely at night. If I'm home, the computer calls me to spend time, I never have the tv on during the day so I figure it's some form of entertainment.

I also never sit down and read books except at night or weekends so I figure that my "break" times on the computer would be replaced by another "break" time activity.

I have travel forums I look at, fodors.com also chowhound.com a food and restaurant forum, also artspan.com an art forum, I've selected a handful of interesting forums that captivate my attention with subject matters that I love. Tons of other boards and forums I've looked at never grabbed my attention enough to return.

I don't do any crafts either so the reading and participating in forums is my thing.

DH turns on the tv and flips the channels , that's his addiction.

Sigh. Me, too. Procrastination, inspiration, all kinds of reasons. Pluswhich I kinda like you guys.

Hi My name is Sue and I am a GW forum addict. I come here often at night sitting on the sofa with the tv on- DH surfs his stuff. I have learned so much here.
I eat lunch at my desk when I am in the office(leftover pesto today), and fly from forum to forum- here- kitchen - conversations in both, cooking, cottage garden Old house. and I have even caught myself looking at the cleaning forum....and I am not a neat freak... helllp meee LOL

It's like going out and socializing without having to dress up. OK, OK, I'm an addict, but I guess you already knew that!!

OK fellow addicts I'm signing off now. I need to go satisfy my other addiction, chocolate. No, I need to go make some brownies and heavenly hash for Easter gifts. I know, I know, it's painful, but somebody has to do it. See ya later.

Total Addict! The problem is that I'm at work!

Can you be addicted to a support group?

Ok, Ok. You pulled me out. I'm here several times a day. I generally lurk more than post but....yes I am an addict! Oh I feel much better now!
For me it's procrastination time, break time, inspiration time, support time, shopping time, vacation time...I could go on but I think there's a new post I need to check....

I check this site 3 or 4 times daily, sometimes more, since 2006. I think I consider this site an addiction but, a great one. I love, love this site, so many talented people and so many great and interesting ideas.
Though I rarely comment. I'm at work during the day too.
IÂm hoping to redo my master bathroom soon, and want to post the awful 1980Âs room to get some ideas before starting the project. Tracy.

Yeah between here, ebay, and craigslist. . . :)

I tell everyone about it. People are usually amazed when i say things like,"if you need help with picking paint colors, or which pillows match they jump on it and help out"
At times when i give my decorating opinions for the new house to DH he assumes EVERYTHING i have to say comes from this forum. He also for some reason thinks there's only gay men on this site! Goofy.

So how long have some of you been around on these forums? Who are the veterans? Say "I!"

    I'm guilty!

Another addict here ... check in once, twice, ok maybe three or more times a day. I accidentally found GW mid summer and found the decorating forum shortly thereafter and have been hooked. Took a look at Craigslist after hearing about it on GW and am now hooked on it also. Must say though that this addiction is much less fattening than my chocolate addiction.
I drop in after putting a load in the washer or dryer, in the morning before anyone else is awake with a cup of coffee, just whenever I am betwixt and between other things. And I agree with Brutuses .... "It's like going out and socializing without having to dress up." :D

sheesharee, I had to laugh when I read your post about your DH thinking all that are here are gay men. When I tell DH that Christopher Lowell is coming back to TV he'll die. All he heard for years was "Christopher said this and Christopher said that." Now all he hears is the people on the forum.........!!! Christopher Lowell and Lynette Jennings are the two who showed me I didn't have to be afraid of color and so many other things as well. Does anyone know what Lynette Jennings is doing these days? Last I saw of her was on a commercial for a sleep number bed.

After sending a few business emails and having lunch, I had to check back on this post, lol.........

but I do have a big piles of bills to pay, so adios, for now...........

Total addict here, too, though I try to justify it by saying that I'm working on decorating our "used to be new" house. (A friend lovingly told me that I had a year to use the unpacking excuse and now that the year is over, it's time to finally finish unpacking and actually finish decorating.)

I see that others are procrastinators. I think I'm the worst combo: a procrastinating perfectionist.

Does anyone else have problems with mail or papers????? How often do you open your mail?

DH handles all the bills. He opens every day and files till time to pay. I open my mail and dispose of it right then and there. That's the only way to keep a handle on the mail clutter. I've even begun looking at catalogs when they come in and pitch them soon after.

Now papers are another story. I tend to let them lie and really shouldn't. I have devised a system where all my receipts go. It's a plastic container on top of my desk. It has a drawer and is simple to just open the drawer and throw in the receipts. Filing is my downfall.

mitchdesi I like that term - soft addiction - makes it sound much less hardcore!!!

sheesharee I've been around various forums since 2000 - hence the DLM2000

Yes I'm (softly) addicted, yes I'm a perfectionist, yes I have paper issues (because too flippin' much of it comes into my life!) but I do open mail daily and pitch, file or pay as indicated. My perfectionist nature won't allow me to pay late - what would the gas company think of me, LOL!

dlm, I read a book that was titled that, soft addictions, so I can't take credit for it. I'll post the full title and author this weekend, I'm not home right now.
The book dealt with all the time wasters and things we feel compelled to do that are filling our days and making us feel busy.

I never finished the book since I spend too much time on the laptop, lol......

LOL Mitch. That's like the book on procrastination that I never got around to reading.

OK, my name is __________ and I'm an addict. I check twicE a day, once in the morning while having my coffee and then once at night. Ditto for craigslist. I actually have a routine, discussions first, then conversations, then furniture and finally buying and selling homes. Then on to CL and off to work I go!

I am addicted too! At dinner tonight I announced that I had just posted pictures of our newly painted rooms - DH has heard it before but DD said "What"??? Hey, she has Facebook and I have GW!

So here's to all my fellow addicts - we're in this together!

I found myself telling a friend about my friends on the forum. I only look at and post on Kitchens, Home Decor, and Appliances. I have stopped Cooking Forum and now Cottage Garden as far as posting. I still lurk there only.

I did find out about Food Blog Search engine...it is ruinous. It searches 2000 food blogs. I love to cook and work at my son's restaurant and also bake their bread. So I count this as part of my research for work...right ? Caroline

Yes, I would like to cut back from this addiction. I have traded in my "reading books" time into computer time. On the plus side, it has cut back on my TV time.

meg at least you HAVE the book.....I've been meaning to get one.....!!!

I guess I had better "fess" up too! Have been on GW since 2003. Usually on the garden forums, but do pop in here often to lurk. Haven't posted much the last year as my DH was injured at work, so life has gotten a whole lot busier.

Yes, I'm hooked...I procrastinate, get inspriation, meet lots of great people... :-) Don't have internet access at work, which is probably a good thing!

    Squirrel,

    apparently, yes...ditto.

OMG Yes. It all started when my BF discovered the Kitchen site. Spilled over into Appliances / Bathroom / and now I'm lurking on this one.

I do hope this addiction will end when our renovations end. But I'm sure when it comes time to paint and decorate, I'll be here, seeking your advice:) Mira

I'mmm baaaack! I missed you all since lunch today! what did I miss!! what did I miss? How many lamps did Kitchen Kelly buy today?? any more ducks from Oceanna?? what colors are up? Who's room is finished? ooooh pretty!!
Seriously, these forums and you folks have inspired me and given me many hours of enjoyment and relaxation. Who needs tv anyway?? See ya at lunch tomorrow!! Sue

I'm in denial. I need to attend Gardenholics Anonymous meetings?

What? Me? What on earth are you talking about? :::::Batting eyelashes:::::

    lindybarts, that's funny!!

Just because I decide not to leave my office for lunch and munch on stale crackers so I can catch up on GW does not mean i have an addiction. It's mearly my new weight loss program. And the fact that I forgo sleep and spend my 'after everyone is in bed' time with all you instead of my nice comfy bed and sleeping husband does not mean I'm addicted. I'm merely a test bunny for 'Can you live on stale crackers and Starbucks' research.

    So no - I don't have an addiction at all. I'm perfectly able to stop typing and go to bed. Really . . . I am . . . I promise . . . stopping right now . . . here i go . . .

Glad I am not alone in this, though that was never really questioned in my mind- it was a question of how many!
Ya'all are to be commended because this group is truly a wonderful, giving bunch with a great sense of humor. (and... ya'all don't know me, but the ya'all just seems to fit even though I was born and raised in Brooklyn and have been in NJ for over 25 years...ya'all know what I mean?)

    Well, um, yeah.

(sheila, now that DD's taking Latin, I've been able to explain to her that my use of "y'all" is the second person plural of "you" :))

Been hooked since 2004. Sometimes I get kind of physically sick of it and stay away for -- oh, a few days :)

What is it? The typeface? The graphic layout? Something about this site is different from other sites, and I felt it from the beginning. I find myself checking to see if g'web has a forum for whatever it is I'm needing help in--yesterday, found the link for the free annual credit reports from the various agencies over on Home Finances. Thank you, g'web :)

Actually branching out into the garden fora now, too--for local plant swaps. Posted once on landscape design and *didn't* get my head handed to me--got simple incredibly helpful advice. Was completely shocked, considering the forum's reputation.

I am sooooo glad to see that I'm not the only one! I love this place. Just found it as we finished up our major kitchen reno in November. I was hitting the Kitchen forum daily for all their great advice. I lurked here until February . . . when my life got semi-normal again. These days, I hit the computer the minute I get back in the mornings from running DD to the bus stop. I'm back again sometimes while I nibble on lunch and then one more time before I head out to p/u DD from the bus stop. No evening computer for me, though. DD's text books are now accessible with a computer, so she needs it to work on her homework most afternoons. DH hits the computer every evening after dinner to work on his charts or investment stuff until 9PM. It's probably a good thing, or I'd be a *real* addict here ;~) !!!

Hello. My name is Caroline and I am a forum-a-holic.

I don't spend long stretches of time on the computer (very often, LOL), but I do take all my "breaks" here and I check forums at least twice a day. I even use a time to keep myself on tract. I have a routine...check and answer emails (delete the silly "forwards" unread; they could steal my forum time, LOL), then I check the Home Decorating, Kitchens, Baths, Remodeling, and The Kitchen Table forums. Less often, I check the Cleaning, Cottage Gardens, Small House forums, too.

We are currently remodeling two bedrooms (new closet configurations, new closet and entry doors, refinishing hardwood floors, installing baseboard, casings and crown, and paint all round), a bath (gutted), extending a linen closet (to hide a 24" square patch where the chimney use to be), and planning the new kitchen, sun porch, entryway, and livingroom. Yes, the Little House of Horrors is living up to its name.

I've learned so much on the forums here. The forums, and all the kind, helpful, friendly people, have been such a blessing as we've tried to muddle our way through this "it's a fixer-upper" ordeal.

My name is Caroline, and I am a forum-a-holic.

But I could quit any time I want...yeah; right! Anytime I want to feel lost and alone and overwhelmed again!

OMG. Just found this site that apparently documents just how addicted we all are.

Here is a link that might be useful: Board Reader

Oh my gosh! that is CRAZY! I have 84 (now 85) posts! Somebody stop me....and to think I was laying low...

Funny, I never knew there was a board reader. What the heck would people use that for? Apparently, they felt the need to summarize our addiction.

I was a little relieved to see that I wasn't listed. Then again the term "author" appealed to me.

I didn't know there was a board reader either. Kinda creepy! Big Brother is watching! Glad Oceanna is #1. At least she has a good excuse, she's retired. I'm "supposedly" hard at work with running the household and keeping up with my girls. Mommy guilt is setting in for sure! I think I better go do some homework with them, read them a book, play a game...something besides squandering my precious moments while they are small. (half joking, half NOT) :c(

All day and night every day and night. At work. At my kids' homes. We have a few computers here in the house, and so in the morning as soon as I get up, and then when I come down to the kitchen in case something interesting got posted while I was walking down the stairs.

And when I've posted a question and I'm hoping to get some responses, it's even worse.

And I only found out about GW by accident about 2 months ago when in the early stages of kitchen planning (I'm still sort of in the early stages) I googled "white granite" & it brought me to the kitchens forum. My life hasn't been the same.

The good part is, I'm playing a lot less Spider Solitaire :-).

Yup. I bought a Roomba because people here were recommending them. I didn't have time to program it, but turned it on anyway, then I lost track of it. DS1 heard me say the Roomba was missing and said, "Uh oh, what if it got out on the open highway." Next was, "MISSING episode in the making." Then, "Should we do an artist's rendering and put up posters?" DH's comment was "I see a new thread on Gardenweb in your future." I guess he knows I'm addicted whether I admit it or not.

I found it today, stuck under the sofa in the study, struggling to escape.
