What would you do?

17 years ago

In the afternoons I work out three days a week with a personal trainer. I usually come home the same way each time. On several occasions as I am driving home I have seen this stray dog. I have had to actually stop in the middle of this busy street to allow him to cross. I have seen him several times and yesterday I saw him again as I was going to my gym. He looked quite a bit thinner yesterday. I thought at first when I saw him that he might be a parking lot watch dog b/c it is in a construction type business part of town. It is not a good part of town at all. The thought of stopping and rescueing the dog makes me nervous in that area. It is only minutes away from a very expensive historic neighborhood. But that stret is scarry. I went to our Humane Society which happened to be up the street. They told me to call the city rescue. I went back to check on him and I could not find him. I am concerned about him. He looks like he is just roaming needlessly. Oh and them I am depressed again when I saw a darling Australian shepard mix puppy at the Humane society. I knew better than to go inside! Any suggestions on the stray- What would you do?

    Since you couldn't find him, maybe the humane society or city has picked him up already?

    If not, I'd get a friend to go with me & try to pick him up, but be careful & be patient;
    it sounds like he's been living on his own for a long time, & he might be very wary of people.

    I wish you the best luck.

    If I spotted a stray dog anywhere I would pick it up and take it to the local shelter. I've picked up strays at local parks, each time they had tags on so I was able to contact the owners. I have to pick them up - I am afraid they will be run over by a car.

    Look in the phone book or on the net for the names of some rescue organizations in your area. Call them and ask them for help. They either will help you or will network to find someone to help you, and will probably go with you to look for the dog. I've never found the Humane Society to be particularly helpful. Please help that poor dog, and thank you for caring. You sound like me, in that unless you try, you will be haunted.

    It truly worries me.He looks like he has lost weight since I last saw him. I drove by there yesterday and could not find him. I did call the city rescue and hopefully they found him. I have not been able to get him out of my mind. Someone must be feeding him occasionally because he has been homeless for so long. I will keep watching for him.

    Keep smelly, yummy treats in the car to lure him with if you see him again. Also a leash, or a slip-noose one like the vets always have. I keep things like this in the car all the time - just in case. I am like Gina - too afraid something bad will happen. I once took a wet lab home after he was swimming in the pond next to work. The owners knew he got out all the time and did not care. When I caught him another time, I just put him back in his backyard because no one was home.

    It is amazing what we do for animals that their own owners do not do! We brought in two of our neighbors dogs with tags on and called the owners to let them know they were SAFE and with us just a block away. It took them 45min to come and pick up THEIR dogs! This was walking distance. Another time I found a dog in the groc. store parking lot with tags and a phone number. I called the number with no avail. but had the address on his tags. I knew the neighborhood and proceeded to take him home. I also left a message with my name and phone number on the answereing machine. When I found their house no one was home. I knocked on the next door neighbors door and told them about the dog. They said they would take it until their neighbors returned. I NEVER received a phone call of thanks from the family! It really bothers me the lack of responsibility of pet owners! UGh!
