Do these chairs work?

We bought two champagne velvet chairs on approval this weekend, and I have to decide by tomorrow if I want to keep them. I think the color and size is right, but the chairs are sort of "bling-y" with the nail head detail. What do you all think - do they work in the room? We still need new side tables and different throw pillows. I'm thinking rustic wooden side tables with two matching lamps flanking the sofa.

I love 'em! I think they look great! So, if you decide to toss them, please email me first! :-) As an aside, though, I don't quite get why you would flank the sofa with rustic wooden tables. Nothing in that lovely room is saying "rustic" to me. Do you have photos of the tables you have in mind?

The are absolutely beautiful! I wouldn't even put a pillow on the chairs so they can stand alone.

I really like the chairs, but I don't think they are the "perfect" ones for your room.

I like the chairs, but not with your couch.

I like the chairs very much, but preferred the ones you had there. (I'm assuming you're looking for new because the others were just placeholders?) I don't think they add very much to your room.
    Sorry.

They work, but I will have to agree - I just don't think they are "THE" chairs for your beautiful room. Which way are you leaning?

I love, love, love the chairs in that room. Unfortunately they don't work with couch. Too bad.

The style seems to go in a different direction than the rest of the room. I would like to see the rustic tables first.

I much prefer what you had there before. Then the room had pow, now there are too many neutrals and it lacks life, IMHO. Such a pretty room, I know you will get it right eventually!

You have such great taste I hate to even suggest anything. These chairs don't look anywhere near the quality as the ones you have now, but maybe something similar might work? These come in both turquoise and orange.

thanks for the input, all. I sort of agree there is a disconnect between the sofa and chairs - I think that is my main issue with it. DH loves the chairs and wants to keep them - they are super comfortable and well made, but I am not sure design wise they are the "right" ones.

Here is a photo with the re-claimed wood side tables - ultimately a console will go behind the sofa where the two lamps would sit - the side tables are too low for lamps.

arapaho, i like those Urban Outfitter chairs - those might be a good option - thanks.

dee, i liked the other chairs too, but the other chairs were MCM and too low - as soon as we got the black piano, the brown chairs seemed too small, like they fit under the piano.

Gosh, I like the chairs with the sofa, the marble fireplace surround, the rug, etc. it presents a very tone on tone, soothing appearance that is very elegant. Love the orange accents, and how clever to pick a color that is right around the corner of the color wheel from all the gold!

I am not crazy about the rustic tables; they are too clunky and country, and haven't the spare, handmade rustic esthetic that would work with what you have. Silvered or mirrored tables, lucite tables, or black ebony oriental looking end tables with straight legs curved inward at the bottom of the foot......I can see any of those.

Not loving the two tables on either end of the couch, especially if you are talking about adding a console behind the couch as well.

I think part of the issue for me with this whole thing is all the height feels like it is on the fireplace side of the arrangement, and it all feels like an island, closed off in the middle of the open space.

I wonder if you could move the couch to the right side of the fireplace, console behind with lamps, which will add height and visual weight to the couch as compared to the taller chairs. Coffee table in front of the fireplace.

Put the two chairs opposite, on the left side of the fireplace, with a table between them. A garden stool like this with a glass top added might be a nice addition:

    orange garden stool

I think this would open up the whole seating space, making it feel more welcoming and less like an isolated island.

I apologize in advance because I don't read every post and this is sort of off-topic, but what happened to your gorgeous orange drapes? Are you changing direction?

And did you paint your LR a different color and change your rug?
I must have missed a post or 2...

I agree with many, the chairs are pretty, but not quite right.

fun2bhere, yes, sadly the drapes are no longer. They were fun while they lasted, but with all the sun light they faded and the whimsical nature of them started to wear off.

    thanks, kswl!

les, you nailed the design challenge of this room. I call it the "floating living room". Because of the odd shape of the room, we have no walls to put furniture on. I like your suggestion, but are you suggesting putting the sofa/console table against the wall? If so, there's a hearth that juts out so we only have about 70 inches of usable wall space, and the sofa is 72 inches. Any other ideas for layout?

My decision has been made: the chairs are going back. I love the chairs in theory, but they are just too formal for our space. The velvet and bling makes me think of Liberace. So....back to the drawing board!

thank you everyone that helped me make this decision!

    Oh gee,
The end of the thread...not sure if you'll check in, again.
I love those chairs! Would you mind sharing where you got them, please.

    Thanks Pip...love your room!

The sheen on the fabric bothers me.

Sea, the chairs are Andrew Martin "Venus" chairs - he's a British furniture maker. Sourced from HD Buttercup.

So sorry that the orange draperies were so short-lived. I loved their geometric design and bright color. It was so refreshing to see pictures of your room because it wasn't grey or brown. I'm sure the next iteration will be beautiful, too. I just happened to really love the orange and turquoise/blue.

Well, I for one am sorry to see them go, pip, they are scrumptious and the velvet looks a quality that would have worn well.

Too bad the chairs didn't work, they sure were pretty. I liked the sheen on them and the lines were quite elegant.

    Keepers.

Well, I think only three of us wanted them to stay! Darn! lol

I think they're too much for the couch. That shiny look makes the couch look flat.

I agree Jane - I think that is what bothered me too. I also loved the original chairs.

I like the chairs too very much in the room ( the color, sheen, shape and nail heads) but don't recall the original ones. I do remember the swan on the wall and prefer the room with that gone, however.
Would you post your old pic again?

I love what you've done with the room - the new rug is fabulous. It's such a clean, bright space. Did you ever share the wall color? The fireplace is now the standout in the room.

thanks for weighing in, everybody! I envision side chairs with some color or pattern, since the rug is so neutral and the sofa is cream. I'm still not giving up on finding some wonderful vintage ones that we can recover.

arapaho, thanks - I didn't share my new wall color, but it's BM Revere Pewter. We like the warmth it brings to the space. I was inspired by many folks here who have painted their rooms RP.

bumblebeez, the swan has been moved to the other wall in the living room where it doesn't compete with the HVAC register. I forget who said they didn't like it there (was it you bumblebeez?), but thanks for the suggestion - it now lives on a wall where it is the focal point.

fun2behere, i liked the curtains too. They were so fun. But since they weren't meant as curtains (they were duvet covers), the fabric faded really quickly with all the sun exposure and started to look worn and tired. I'm waiting to pick out curtain fabric until we finalize the chair decision.

Here's a photo of the old chairs (the brown MCM ones). I liked the lines but because the chairs weren't tall enough, when you walked in the piano made the living room furniture feel like it was sitting in a hole. Getting some chairs with some height in there should make the space feel connected. This was taken a few months back:

and the now (minus the velvet chairs):
