Calling all those knowledgeable on Antiques

Need to sell mom's antique buffet. Anyone knowledgeable on antiques that can tell me a range of what this is worth? I'm not positive, but looks like tiger wood to me. Great condition!

I am no expert, but I do browse antique stores a lot.

Here (Central Florida ) a store may price your mother's pretty piece at about 700.00. It might sit for awhile and finally sell for $ 500.00. If the right customer comes in.

If you are selling it from your home, expect less.

you may want to post the picture on the Gardenweb Antiques forum.

Well, it's flame mahogany with a satinwood banding. But it's impossible to really judge the quality of the construction.
It's very decorative and showy, and seems to be in good condition. Great if you like the Regency style, but it's not really in fashion just now.

    It's very pretty!

Around here, in OK there are similar ones offered on Craig's List-- no less -- starting at $200. However, that one looks much nice than the ones I've seen for "sell" ;-) on CL.

At antique stores around here, they have price tags starting at $475 and up.

Things tend to sell for less in my neck of the woods.

It is very pretty but is it really antique over 100 years old? I'm just asking because if it is newer and marked with a brand name for the furniture company it might fetch more by mentioning it as such and such brand from 19??.

Are the drawers dovetailed? Look for an furniture company markings on the back.

I'm a furniture junkie not an antique dealer though but have a mix of old and new in my house. I know i would pay more if you listed it on say Craig's list and said it was a 1950 Henredon sideboard.

Just my 2 cents without more info.

It's hard to tell from the picture....but it appears like a very nice old (as in antique) buffet, flame mahogany, perhaps satinwood inlay, looks to be in great condition...
NOT a candidate for Craig's list.
I would like to see more and better pictures....but...it appears to me you don't have a $500 piece....more like 6 or 7 times that much. But I will reserve final judgment until I see better pictures.
That inlay is fabulous.....and regency....the good stuff is always "in fashion".
Research more before you sell it for pennies.

Can you show us pictures of the back and bottom of the piece, as well as the back of the doors and hardware, and the sides and inside of the drawers?

That's a real beauty! Where do you live?

It's really pretty. Are there any labels or marks in the drawers, on the back or underneath?

I definitely think it is worth more than $500-$750 but I would need some more information.

If it's a Henredon, Hickory White, Craftique or a similar brand the price should go much higher.

I think it's in the revival age-group where a lot depends upon who may have manufactured it, and the local market.

The veneer is very nice, but some aspects of the form are a bit of a mixed bag: the serpentine shape is a bit flat, and the husk or bellflower carving is kind of indelicate. The brasses are a little small. This is a nice, but pretty typical revival piece that appears to have been really well-kept.imo.

It's very nice but when real Sheraton-style sideboard of the earlier period is commanding less (unless it is an exceptional piece)--it has an impact on revival pieces as well. That's what the market is like here. I would say the exception would be if it were a maker that made really pricey high quality revival pieces like Stickley or Baker, the price would greater, but this doesn't seem to have the emphatic shape of their pieces.

After that long dissertation I can't really give you a price on it other than under $1800 retail locally, lacking other information about it. So from a private buyer people would expect under $1000

Thanks for all the info! I will get more pics and more info on the piece today and let you all know. By the way I'm in central Arkansas for the person who asked.

I found this one on the internet that looks very similar for $1850, but mom's looks like it has more detail and perhaps bigger.

I would talk to a local consignment shop (or two?) and see what they say. I see those often in a consignment shop I go to, we're more rural in location and they price at around 300-400. I suspect more urban areas would be more.

You might also contact local interior decorators and antique shops. They might offer you a better price than a consignment shop.

I just saw a similar piece used as a double bathroom vanity. It was beautiful. The sinks were on the ends over the doors. They had used a piece of marble for the top. The picture was in a current renovation magazine. Just thought you might want to consider this before selling.

Technically it's not an antique given as its likely mid 30s early 40s (so not 100 years old) but many people aren't sticky on that stuff. It is not worth thousands. A quick look shows you it's a repro verses an original even though it's a really pretty one.

Buffets aren't knocking down the doors on moving vans lately which is unfortunate for you. That said in my necks of the wood, it would likely move for around 500. Possibly lower if you have military base around who furnished their officers units with good furniture. Hen you'll find that you need to cut the price in half because there is too much available.

Yes, flame with satinwood. Traditional, so appealing to that group. But people want you to sell them your things for next to nothing, so I wouldn't expect more than 500-700 on a good day.

If you advertise, also say "possible bathroom vanity." I wrote a post using dining room sideboards as bathroom vanities that featured a blogger that bought one (like yours) for $75. See link:

Re: 2nd Vanity photo in blog. That's heartbreaking to see that sideboard for $75. Not sure if they had to refinish it or repair or what the condition was but that's a nice looking piece of furniture. It kind of bugs me that people do this to nice furniture, but that's just me, lol. It does look amazing. It has become a bit cliche though.

I have a Baker sideboard similar to the OP's but it's front is serpentine in shape. It was expensive new and when I see these pictures and the prices I feel rather foolish. I've had it for 16 years though and at that time there was no way you would find a sideboard like that for $75 or even find one period on consignment. They were at the height of popularity once again as they are always popular but it was the in thing back in the day. I worked long and hard to get that piece and it kills me to think they are filling up the consignment shops now for a fraction!! Sigh....
