A lot depends on the style of the room. The one above leans more traditional.

We have a vaulted tray ceiling in DH's office and the room is very traditional with lots of cherry wood and leather, so we put in a chandelier.

Depending on ceiling height, you may be able to use a semi flush mount which I think are far more attractive than flush mounts.

The ceiling fixtures that I hate are the ones that look like a woman's breast. DH has no trouble with them (wonder why) but I think they are awful.

You also want to think about how much light you will need for the size of the room. That will determine how many and what size bulbs you need.

Like it or not, for bright light, energy efficiency from a single fixture, you can't beat fluorescent lighting....in my craft room I have 3 large ones. But that room was designed all around function first.
