please help with sink placement

We would appreciate any input about sink placement and some other things for this small basement kitchen as shown below (the tight setup is due to the fact that we wanted to minimize costs) .

* - sink placement - I will use a 27" sink so a 30" cabinet is needed. However, should the sink be placed where it is in the plan (so close to the end of the run?) or should I place it in the middle of that section or to the left?

** - regarding that 12" base cabinet, should we use drawers, or use a lazy susan, or do a blind corner cabinet?

*** - this part of the base cabinets will come about after deciding on the sink and the 12" of cabinets to the left.

At the moment, I am not putting in a DW. Any advice about the cabinets in the peninsula?

I realize that the layout is not ideal, but too it is too late. All I can do is figure out the sink placement and the rest of the lower cabinets.

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Anna

I would keep the sink where it is. You will need all the counter space you can get between the cooking area and the sink. You might consider a 24" wide sink with a right rear drain. That will allow you to have trash storage under the sink - and allow you to have a larger cabinet to the left of the sink.

    Hi Anna,
I replied to your email but I'll post my response here too, in case anyone else wants to comment on it. I've answered your specific questions you asked in the email... but upon seeing your sketch, above, I'd say you need to push the sink left a bit. Are you using very inexpensive stock cabs with limited options, or something semi-custom that can provide odd widths? I'd like to see at least 8" on the right of the sink cab, which leaves that amount plus 12" for a susan corner bifold to the left of the sink, if I'm not mistaken.

Put a bank of drawers (cutlery, spices, etc) and a trash pullout in the peninsula. Will the budget allow another corner unit in the right corner?

Anyway- answers to the questions you emailed about my layout:

My fridge is 36" wide (it is a counter depth model) with a filler piece/end panel and then a 21" base cabinet. 30" range. The corner is a super susan with 12 x 12 bifold opening (so, 12" on one run and 12" on the other) then a 9" pull-out (I use ti for oils and vinegars, very convenient), then a 36" sink base, then the DW, then a 30" wide bank of drawers (cutlery, plates/bowls, etc.)

I find the spacing between range and sink to be quite comfortable.

The susan with 12 x 12 opening is fairly useful, but I do not store stuff in there I need to access on a very frequent basis. I'd want larger opening for something like daily-use pots and pans.

I only have the upper you see there, since there are openings into another room over the sink run. I'll attach pics. I DO, however, have a separate pantry space where I keep most foodstuffs. it would definitely be difficult in the few uppers I do have in the kitchen proper.

In my island I have: 18" drawer bank (small kitchen utensil-y things, spices, plastic bags/wraps, tupperware and a pull-out trash directly opposite the sink. Opposite the fridge is a wonderful 24" base with pull-outs for all my daily-use pots and pans (drawers would have been better though).

I'll post all this on the forum, too, in case others have comments. They helped me with the layout :)

These are pics from during construction, but you'll get the idea...

    Hope this helps!

    thanks for the quick replies!

stacey - thank you for the details, photos and ideas. It is good to hear that you feel that there is enough space between the range and the cornercounter.

drachiele- you have addressed my greatest fear - that there will not be enough counter space to the left of the sink if the sink is moved over.

Thanks to both of you, I will have a lot to think about.

If you move the sink to the left a little bit, you'll still have the same amount of space I do (21" from the corner) which really isn't too tight at all. I'd be more worried about it being crammed against the peninsula.

I'd guess, in a kitchen that small, you'll probably prep on the peninsula where there's the most space. I prep on my island, it's the most convenient to fridge/range/sink...
