Poop!!!

Okay, sorry to be so crass, but I really need advice here and figured that might grab attention. LOL

So we have this new guide dog puppy who is such a joy and a major poop machine. Puppy manual states that we have to confine him to one area to do his "big busy", of course because when he goes to be with a blind person he can't just pull them along the yard. We are to then have him sit and pick it up. So we've been doing that and then have one trash can that we put it in and then it gets picked up on trash day.

Here's the problem........we live in Florida......it's 95 degrees here and the trash is on the southwest side of the house. It cooks in there!!!! We got home this afternoon and the stench had filled the garage because the jalousie windows on the side door were open. I went to put more in there later and it is filled with maggets (sp?) and I almost got sick.

Help!! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!

Here's the time to reuse all those extra plastic grocery bags. Drop the poop in,gather the bag just about the poop, twist the bag 3-4 times, then pull the excess down tight around the 'poop bundle' and twist again. Repeat as many times as you can with the bag you have. I use this method when dumping chicken scraps in my can which sits on the carport facing south and it gets just as hot here in the carolinas. You may get an odor when you open the can, but shouldn't be able to detect it otherwise.

You could also start with a large trash bag in the can and every couple of days tie that off and then start with a new bag. The idea would be multiple plastic layers to seal the poop from the insects and keep the smell from getting out.

Also, a layer of sawdust or wood shavings over each layer of poop would help, although it might get expensive.

Could you keep the poop in a smaller, sealed can (in the shade) and just throw that bag in the garbage right before pickup day?

I guess I should have said that when we pick it up we use our old plastic grocery bags, tie them and then toss them in the trash can. Sometimes I double back it. He's a yellow Lab so for a puppy his droppings are BIG! LOL

I like the idea of the smaller can and actually was discussing that with DH last night. I have an old stainless steel can from before the kitchen remodel that also has a foot pedal so we wouldn't have to touch the can. I also have some stuff called "Cedarcide" that interferes with insects pheremones (sp?) so I guess I could spray it with that and see if it keeps away the flies. I'll try it.

I also saw that "Doggie Dooley". It's like a mini sepctic tank. That's pretty pricey though so it'll be as a last resort.

You may want to look into a composting operation. It will definitely take care of the smell and its very environmentally friendly.

If you put the doo doo in a bucket full of shredded paper or sawdust, it will compost and the odors will be minimal. If the volume of shredded paper is maintained at about 3 times the volume of the doo doo, that should be enough to keep odors down.

Shredded paper can be junk mail. I always have too much junk mail. You need to keep the plastic out of the system.

Check out the humanure handbook. The same system can work for pet manure too.

"We are to then have him sit and pick it up."
I had to read that again because I thought you were teaching the dog to pick up his poop!!! LOL What an intelligent dog that must be! LOL
jopeyweek- I wonder if sprinkling a layer of lime over the poop would help with the decomposing and the odor?? I remember my grandparents use to sprinkle lime (powder) into the "out house" hole for that purpose.LOL

There are systems made just for that.......see the link below.
A neighbor had two large dogs.......one a St. Barnard........in a small yard and he used this system. I never smelled an odor from his yard.

Why use lime (something that you have purchase) when shredded junk mail (something that everyone has plenty of for free) works just as good...

That's actuallly a really good idea joepyeweed! I also like the idea of the doggy dooley disposal system but heck, I can't think of a better use for all that junk mail and it's free! Can I line the bucket with a trash can liner or is that defeating the purpose? I haven't had time to read the humanure book yet but will try to soon! Tommorrow is garbage day thank goodness!

If you are "tossing" the stuff then I would use a liner. But if you are going to use the compost then I probably wouldn't use a liner.

The book is an easy read... and if you have any questions, you can go over to the composting forum on the garden web side of the site.
