Drawer question

Hello,

I am trying to work on a cabinet plan and would like to do mostly drawers. I will be doing a cabinet under the sink, next to the sink, and probably for the corners too.

My question is do those here with lots of drawers keep them "matching"? I am wondering about depth mostly but I guess width probably matters too.

I told the cabinet guys I would get them a plan to estimate on within a week here. :o/

I think for the most part, drawer height should line up with the stack next to it. Mine have the standard narrow drawer on top and two deep drawers below. Width does not seem to matter at all though....my drawer stacks are all different width and it looks wonderful. I have seen some kitchens with 4 drawer stacks mixed in with the 3 drawer stacks. I think it looks best if the 4 drawer stacks are on the end of the run and not mixed in with the 4 drawer stacks though.

I've seen it both ways and IMO it looks fine either way. Some (most?) companies configure their 4-stacks to even up with the 3-stacks so that the two short drawers are the same height together ans the one tall drawer. I'm assuming you're having them custom built? Ask your cabinet guy how he does it.

Mine would look better if they lined up a bit more. But that might be because MOST line up. I don't think it really ends up being as obvious as we think. Once you stop obsessing about kitchen details and can be a normal person again, it's not a big deal.

(And of course some colors and door styles pull it off better than others.)

I don't have two drawer stacks next to each other. There's a cabinet of some sort b/w each one...6" pullouts, trash pullout, sink cabinet. The only place where a drawer was made the same size to match the one next to it is the oven cabinet...the bottom drawer was made the same height as the drawer base's bottom drawer next to it...and I wish it weren't. I wish that drawer had been 3" or so shorter so my ovens would be 3" lower... At the time the match seemed better than lowering the oven, but in reality, the upper oven is a little high (the lower oven is fine & if it were a single oven the height would be perfect). It's not impossibly high, just a little bit too high.

I measured my stuff, and figured out that I could use the same heights all the way around, but it just worked out that way. I've seen kitchens with all different height drawers and they looked great. My widths are all different, however--the widest ones that would fit. From memory, I think the interior heights on the perimeter are 6", 9", 11", and the widths are from the oven to the corner unit, standard corner drawers, 48" wide pot DW & sink, the drawer over the trash is the same height as my other top drawers, then standard corner drawers. I have fridge drawers in my island, and the drawers on either side line up with them, a two drawer stack and a four drawer stack. I'm still putting things away, but it seems to be working fine.

Thank you so much everyone! I am so grateful for all the advice that I've received on this forum.

I will look over my plan and think about what I need some more. My biggest concern is the island. The perimeter will be naturally broken up by corners and appliances but the island will have a cabinet for the prep sink and other than that I can do all drawers if I want to. So that is where I need to be careful.

The cabinet guy is willing to do whatever but I don't think he's had a lot of gardenweb kitchens in our area. :oD We are sort of in the boonies here. So I really feel like it is my responsibility to come up with the plan. He will put it in the computer and show me of course so if something is obviously looking bad I will be able to tell but I would like to avoid lots of back and forth and time expenditure if possible.

Thank you again. And thank you plllog for the measurements. I think that will be helpful in deciding what I need.

If you mean the interior of your island, not the "outward face" of it, I would put function over form and put whatever WORKS best there. Stand at an imaginary prep sink and pretend to work there. Do you need a cutting board, knife, colander, whisk? How should those be accessed/stored?

I have a 4 drawer stack next to a 3 and I think it looks fine.

As others here, all of our top drawers (including the falst ones under the sinks) are the same height, which I think is important. But I ended up with all 3-drawer cabs, as I have more use for the deeper drawers than the shallower ones in a 4-drawer stack. I didn't worry about widths matching, except on either side of the stove, because of the symmetrical design there. On the island is a place you can probably balance form and function to get a look you like while also having good function...I, personally, think the appearance/balance of the island seems more obvious and would compromise a little bit, if necessary, to have it look nice.
