decorating with plates

How much is too much?

I just recently put up my collection of red transferware on the wall that leads from the living room to the family room

When we redo the living room, within the month, I was going to put up the North Dakota Plates that were my DH's grandmothers. Will that be too much?

I think there are about 7 or 8 North Dakota plates. My red transferware is always growing, bad habit!

Thanks,

Laura

Are you in the process of still adding more plates. They could make quite a statement if arranged a little differently. Something like this would be stunning!

I would love to add more! But as you know you take them as you find them. I actually have 2 more to hang. Need to get more small ones. Still looking!

Lauraella, I think they look beautiful. What paint is on your red wall?

Lauraella, I hope too much is not too much! Lol
I have a soffet (dated kitchen)over my cabs and my plates
    go all the way around.
In DR over buffet. On a guest room wall.

Yours look great. I saw in a decorating mag..they were from the beadboard all the way to the ceiling. Covered.
    It was fabulous.

The color is Berry Cobbler from Lowes, Valspar. I have Red Velvet in the powder room, but that doesn't come in eggshell, so I picked this the closest thing. I really love it. We have a living room set that was from my DH's grandparents we had it reupolstered in a burgundy and gold fabric, so this really works. I will post more pics of that.

I don't think it's too much; however I agree with kmcg they could be arranged a little differently. I'd like to see it move further away from the (doorbell chime?) as it looks like part of the display.

Here is an excerpt from the Aaron Bros. website I was reading today that was about photo walls. It's a little different in your situation as you are hanging plates, but I would imagine some of the same principals apply:
    -----------------------------------------------------------
How can I create a wall arrangement with family photos?

Depending on how you hang them, groups of photos can relay a story in countless ways. For the best placement, hang photos at eye level and aim for a balance of small and large pieces. It is best if the horizontal center line of the arrangement is at the viewer's eye level. If you are hanging these photos in a living room, dining room or bedroom where most people would be sitting down most of the time, you might consider making your horizontal center line about two feet lower from standing eye level. In laying out the arrangement, use the following guidelines:

    Plan your arrangement:
Using butcher or Kraft paper cut out the shapes of your frames and plays with the arrangement on the floor until you get it right. Keep in mind the boundaries you are working within, such as the width of your sofa, or the length of a table. Place the heaviest piece lowest and to the left, working up and to the right from here.

    Maintain order and form:
To keep balance in your arrangement, align the bottom edges of your frames with the top edges of others; align some left-hand edges and center some frames over others.

    Transfer ideas to the wall:
Once you've decided on the placement, measure the distance between the groupings you've laid out on the floor. Write these measurements down and refer to them as you hang each frame on the wall. When you are ready to hang, begin with a central picture and work outward from there.

You have enough plates that you could copy the center arrangement in the inspiration pic above. Imagine the arrangment above with out the three small plates on each side and the two cresent plates on the bottom. Create a vertical line with four plates, placing the smallest plate second. Add 2 plates vertically on either side of the small plate thereby creating a balanced arrangment. More plates can be aded as you find them always keeping the allover symetrical arrangement.

That doorbell chime is a thorn in my side! We can't seem to find a new one that is decorative and affordable! I can't believe how much they want for these things. I told my DH to just make me a box and I can paint it the same as the wall so it will disappear. Always something!
