Prep Sink Size - help!

hi,

Struggling with the size of our prep sink. Is 12" by 11" large enough for average use, or should I be looking larger? I want to ideally keep it in an 18" cabinet, therefore much larger will be getting too big for our island etc.

I guess having never had a prep sink before, I'm not really sure how I'm going to be using it, and what size is good. I would imagine washing stuff in a colander, draining pasta etc. from the stove, etc.

Help!

Thanks

We have one that is roughly 15x15 and I'm glad I didn't go smaller. There was one that was about 15x13 and I think those extra couple of inches are very handy -- not only for less splash but also so that a large bowl or pan can be worked with there and my large colander fits.

I seem to be posting half of what I am thinking today. Or does tha mean I've had too much already? LOL

Anyway, our prep sink is in a 27' base so that we could use the room below for pet food storage (dogs and cats) where we didn't have room for another cabinet that would be useful-- and it cost less. The same 15x15 sink would fit in an 18" cabinet, but there wouldn't be much useful space below (with a disposal) and the cabinet next to it wouldn't be big enough to work for us either. Not sure if that helps in your situation, but thought I'd mention another way of looking at things...

11x12 seems small to me. I'm not at home right now, so I can't measure, but I seem to think ours is 14x16 (or thereabout)... it seems like a good size.

Plus, a word of advice on faucets... make sure you look carefully at reach / height for your prep sink. Its really easy to get one that is too high, or too far in reach, leading to a lot of splashing.

We went with this one by Delta (in Stainless) Link (new window)

The pivoting spout is perfect... no need for a spray to clean the whole sink / peels / etc.

    Hi - the one I'm looking at (the Blanco self-rimming) is 13.5 x 11.5.

What about depth - is 6" a decent depth?

Mine is about 16 x 14" inside, like alywa's, and pretty close to Lascatx's. It's a Kohler Iron/Tones that can be either a drop in or an undermount...so it can also be installed either direction. We have it installed with it wider across the front in a 20" cabinet. I'm pretty sure there'd be no trouble installing it narrow-way across the front in an 18" cab. I don't think I'd want it any smaller. Not only do you want the pots and colanders to fit, but you want room so you're not scraping your knuckles, too.

My laundry room sink is about 6 inches deep and I hate it -- splash city even with a short faucet and very little work room in between. Sorry, but better to hear it now.

Ours is about 7 1/2" deep. A little splashy, but we have a full-size, high-arc faucet, which probably doesn't help...Oh, and kids using it, who probably turn on the water harder than they need to most of the time.

Ours is 15-3/4" x 15-3/4" x 7-1/2" deep and fits in either an 18" regular sink base or 36" corner sink base (the diagonal front is 17" in a 36" corner SB) [Kohler Undertone 5-sided]

Since ours is on the peninsula (corner sink), we decided to go with a pullout faucet b/c it's lower and we thought it would reduce the splashing [Kohler Farifax Pullout]

Our prep sink dimensions (inside dimensions) 13" w x 18" d (front to back) x 10" high. It worked well as our only sink until the main sink was installed a month or so later. Since I want it as a back-up sink for any task in our kitchen (including pot washing) I wouldn't want it any smaller. I haven't ever found a need for it to be bigger. It was a bit tight fitting the 18" in a standard 24" deep counter along with faucet and backsplash behind.

ARe you talking inside dimensions or outside? A 15" X 15" inside dimension is excellent for prep work and will not look strange if you put a full size faucet on it. Which I assume you will since it is prep. You will want at least 8" depth and many are 9"

Well... my estimates were way, way off. Our inner dimensions are 11"x17"... it is mounted in the "wide" configuration, with a 24" base cabinet. It is 7" deep (not counting the granite... it is undermounted).

The size is good... I guess it could be and inch or two deeper (front to back, not top to bottom)... but it works perfectly in our space.

I have a 16" (inner diameter) round prep sink in an 18" sink base. It was the largest sink I could jam in there, and I'm glad I went that big! It has plenty of room for our largest pots and also wide enough to rinse off a cutting board.
