Missing the signs

18 years ago

I feel awful. I put down my "little girl" Maggie today because of stomach cancer. I can see all the signs when I look back but I didn't at the time! Does this happen often? I was hoping it was something different like thyroid or something so I was sad when they said cancer. Poor thing, feel so bad for not doing anything sooner. Then you are faced with what to do, she stopped eating two days ago and had a grumbling tummy but wouldn't eat anything - even favourite treats. They seem so happy despite all what they are going through. What a hard decision of what to make. I just couldn't do tests or bring her home "for a few more days" I thought that was too selfish for me even though I wanted to so badly. Now I feel like I am regretting doing it but I hope it's for the best as it is the choice I made:(.

    I'm so sorry. It's never easy but you did the right thing. She wasn't going to get any better....only worse...... and I think what you're feeling now is much better than how you'd feel if she had suffered just so you could have had 'a few more days' with her.

    Yes, what you're experiencing happens very often. We all get caught up in daily routines and it's very easy to not notice a subtle change in a pet's behavior.

    There is no one right or wrong in these situations. You made the best choice you could.

    I am so sorry you are going through this. It's heartbreaking and sad and you have my deepest sympathy. I wish you peace in the days and weeks to come.

    I know how you feel. I put down my baby girl last month. Looking back I know there were signs, I just didnt understand them. She started wanting to be outside more and more but would stand at the door looking in. I would open the door but she wouldnt come in. I figured she was just old and confused. I work at home and my office is right near "her" door to her fenced yard so I just spoiled her and let her go in and out , in and out...for a year!. I found out she had a tumor growing in her bladder, it just never crossed my mind...she didnt make trips out at night. On day she just could not urinate.....thats when they found the mass and said they needed to operate..she was too old, nearly blind, going deaf, bad arthritis. I knew it would be cancer, the vet said it would be the most likely reason for the tumor. I still try to convince myself it was best for her to let her go that day. I know I could have done the sugery and maybe still had here here for a while but I know she would have been in more pain. The what if will haunt me forever. I have to remember she looked up and licked my face once she was sedated, I think out of pain for the first time in a long time.........it is so hard on us but I think we did right for our babies. SOB....

    If only they could talk and just say "you know, something just doesn't feel right - can you call the vet?" Nothing is so simple. It is sad because she purred right up to when she was taken away - I couldn't go in the room. Such a sweetie. I will miss her. Thank you for the thoughts. She was 13 so a decent age (I say this so I feel better).

    Cats are good at hideing the signs don't blame yourself. You did what was best so she wouldn't suffer, now you are suffering. I am so sorry. I can tell she had a wonderful 13 years with you.

    I am so sorry for your loss. Like the others have said, cats are so good at hiding these things. With the various things my cats have gone through, it's often only in retrospect that I can clearly see the signs. Last time I was at the vet's, the vet made a similar comment to me about how hard it is sometimes to determine that a cat is ailing, they are so stoic and go about their business as usual.

    Again, I'm so sorry about your kitty.

    You did the right thing, the best thing, the kindest thing.

    & Maggie may not have been sick for very long;

    My vet told me that cancer in dogs & cats often spreads rapidly;
    an animal may be healthy today & desperately ill within 10 days or so.

    A couple of days later I feel really good about the decision I made. Her buddy "Ripple" has been at my side non-stop for the past three days. He's lonely. My kids also took it really bad two days ago (6&7) and after explaining extensively to them why it had to be done I feel very, very comfortable with my decision. It's nice to have the "I will miss her feeling" instead of thinking you may have done the wrong thing. Reading the threads on cancer in pets was too sad and I could only look at a couple of them so I am officially no longer beating myself up over it. Like a lot of you say, the cats tend to hide their illnesses. Thanks.
