Single Sink Selection....'D' or rectangular???

We want to get a 9" deep single SS sink in our small kitchen remodel. We will have custom cabinets built (and the base cabinet under the sink will, hopefully, have at least one trash pullout (maybe two?!)

Even though we can make the cabinet/sink any size, I don't want to "give up" any more counter space than necessary. Having said that, I still need a good sized sink and don't want to make a mistake by going too small.

I've seen the "D-shaped" sinks and, of coure, rectangular ones. Which shape do you think is better and why? What size would be the smallest you'd put in if you only had about 106" length with the sink centered and the DW to the right of it? I'd like to keep the base cabinet under 36", if possible....Maybe 32"???

Lastly, is there any need to go to 16 gauge SS? The granite fabricator will "throw in" an 18 gauge sink (SS 304 and 18/8 Chrome Nickel Content) by Stone (Universe series). I like the idea of using his sink if it isn't of inferior quality. One of his is what I think is called the "D shape" (slightly wider and rounded at the top on the left). The other is a slightly smaller rectangle (inside measurements of 16 x almost 30")They both say they take a 36" base cabinet, but since the cabinet maker can make it any size, I'm hoping he can get it in a smaller base?
