Cat does now meow

By now many of you may know we adopted a kitty. She doesn't meow. Could it have anything to do with remaining URI? It's very strange.

Thank you,

Carla

Has she meowed before? Did she stop meowing. One of my cats lost her voice, she went trhough the moition but nothing came out. I brought her to vet. She has asthma,/allergies. She was on some medication for a few weeks and got better. She hasn't had any re-occurance. I have a feeling it was a sensitivity to something. I am careful of what cleaning products I use around the house, no carpet podwer stuff anymore. (she is indoor only cat) Also am brushing more often to keep coat cleaner. (I don't bathed her) Possibly a lung issue like my cat.

Definitely take her to the vet, it is more likely that she just plain ol' isn't a talking kitty! And trust me, be grateful!

Thank you. I made a mistake in my post title.

Some cats talk, and some cats don't. I have 3 cats; one never meows, one only meows when I am putting food out, and one talks A LOT - constantly. I wouldn't worry about your cat not meowing. Also, she hasn't been at your home long. Like people, some cats will open up after some time has passed.

I would be more concerned if she does not purr when petted.

When I adopted two one year olds, Sally did not meow. She was a very quiet, shy girl. Even her purr was so quiet I had to touch her throat to see if it was vibrating. Then one day I took her to the vet for a check up. In the middle of the drive there she "found" her voice and let out the usual "Oh, no I'm going to the vet!!!!" screech. It was so unexpected I just about drove off the road. She indeed has pipes, and good ones at that, but saves them for emergencies. She's still very quiet with just an occasional meow--more just a squeak.

My cat is like Marita's...only in "kitty emergencies" does she make a sound and even then it's very quiet. She does open her mouth to act like she is going to meow but nothing ever comes out. If I pick her up to squeeze her I will hear a little protest squeak but that's about it. I think some kitties are just more quiet than others. Definately take her to a vet though if it will put your mind at ease. :o)

Some cats just don't make noise- Somalis are a good example.

My calico doesn't meow, either.I think in the almost 4 years I have had her I have heard her make a tiny meowy noise 3 or 4 times.Even when she was in heat she never meowed. She can, just doesn't.Her sister rarely meows either.Their mother was full blood white Persian.

in the wilder types of cats (Somali's bangals, savannahs,) its normal for them to not meow as much or not at all.
