can anyone help???

I have a male min pin who is 3. He is completely house trained, or at least that is what i was told when i got him a year ago. I also have a dog door that he, Duce, and our other dog, Kramer, have access to at all times.

He never ever pee's in the house but will maybe once or twice a day poop in the house. He has a few favorite spots but if those are blocked off he'll find another.

Why is he doing this??? How do i get him to stop???

What breed are the other dogs? Maybe they're bothering him when he's trying to do his business outside? When you let them out, watch from inside the house and see what the interaction is between all three.
My DIL once owned 3 min pins and when the first two alpha dogs got thru the dog door they would wait for the third dog and then pounce on him as he came thru the door. Some of this may be going on with your pets.............

Take your dog out for leash walks a couple of times a day at least, and for a good half an hour. This stimulates yuor dog to go. Smelling where other dogs have been and walking are great ways to get your dog to go on a regular basis, outside the house

The other one is a Cocker Spaniel. I've watched them and if anything the min pin waits til the cocker is done and then wants to pee right where the cocker did. But they typically just do their own thing out there.
I can't figure it out but it is driving me crazy!!
    Any other thoughts???

You might have to separate the dogs and crate the cute little offender until he re-learns when & where he is supposed to go.

You might want to do a search, as this topic comes up frequently and there are several active posts on it now. I agree that you need to walk the dog, not just let it out in the yard. Also, cut those nails back before you get into a good walking program. Long nails are painful.

He already sleeps in his crate at night, if i don't crate him he is in my bed under my covers, LOL! Maybe I'll have to do that naturegurl. I just hate the thought of him being in the crate during the day. But i guess maybe of few days of that and we won't have a problem anymore!

More than a few days. It sounds like you need a regular routine and this also pertains to your other post. Can you tell us what the current potty/play/eat/excercise routine is for your dogs?

Give him rewards for pooping outside and give lots of praise in the praise tone of voice. When he poops inside, yell at him in a deep voice and shun him for an hour or so.

My way of house training is to watch like a hawk and if they start to go inside, grab them and run outside.
My two small dogs never ever go inside unless it is my fault.
Even now, in their middle age, I still make a big deal about when they go outside. They haven't gone inside since they were house trained years ago.

Not all dogs respond well to yelling. (if any) In fact the dog may think that pottying in general is wrong if you yell. And shunning the dog for an hour.... what is that supposed to accomplish? Dogs live in the moment. The time to correct is the split second as the act is beginning to take place. Dogs don't associate the hour long "time out" with the act of pottying in the wrong place.
Some trainers I have talked to are actually rather against correcting! I don't know that I agree with that either but yelling never did much for my dogs except get scared.

They certainly do not live in the moment. They wait all day for me to play with them, walk them, and if we do one new fun thing, that's definitely remembered. They know when I am going out and that they will be staying in.
If my dog does something bad, she avoids ME for hours because she knows it is bad. Positive reinforcement for good behavior
and yes, low mean tone of voice for bad behavior along with turning my back on her and not petting for awhile does work.

Perhaps it isn't for all dogs, both my dogs were rescued abused pups, but they are the most loving sweetest GOOD dogs.
They have never sat on the furniture, chewed things, pooped or peed where they shouldn't, they don't excessively bark and they love everyone. They have never bit anyone either.
And I work hard to develop all their good traits and am well rewarded.

I don't think bumblebeez meant yelling like in high pitch rant. I understood her to mean in a low, deep, stern voice. Sounds like bumblebeez has done a good job with her dogs.

My question is why a three year old dog is having so many bowel movements a day? The dog should only having one once a day. I would have the dog checked for worms and then change his diet. How many times a day is the dog eating? Keeping the dog in the crate during the day as well as at night is not going to correct the problem. Don't feed him more than twice a day and immediately afterwards take him out on a lead to go to the bathroom. I agree his nails need to be trimmed.

So, has he been doing this the entire year you've had him, or is it new behavior?

If it is a new behavior I would think that he's acting out, protesting something that he doesn't care for.

In either case, I'd start from scratch, just as if you were housetraining a puppy. Try to keep a schedule, always on leash, take him to the same spot every time, potty breaks after meals and after walks, crating when he can't be watched well (or gating in the kitchen when you can only keep half an eye on him - dogs are notorious for prefering carpet to tile), and insane amounts of praise/treats/whatever he likes when he potties outdoors.

My personal take on the correcting thing: I'd give a stern no, only if you caught him IN THE ACT. Then I'd take him outdoors to the potty zone. If you managed to catch him before he's finished in the house and can get him to finish there, PRAISE,PRAISE,PRAISE! If you can't catch him IN THE ACT, I would clean thoroughly - and make a mental note of the time of incident. Tomorrow, we'd take a trip to the potty zone half an hour prior to that time.

    Good Luck!

I'm also wondering what he is eating. The cheaper foods have more fillers, which just pass right through the dog and come out the other end. Higher quality foods get digested better so there isn't as much "output". Also, try to cut back his food a bit - if you are feeding too much, you will also get a lot more poop because he can't digest and absorb all the food.

Walking is great for getting dogs to poop - the exercise stimulates their bowels. When let out in the yard, most will just wander around and sniff, instead of getting real exercise. If you can get him out for a good (say 30 minute) walk before you leave, that should help a lot. Good luck!

    Thanks for all the tips...
Here's are some answers to your questions,

Yes he's been doing it for the year i've had him. I have yelled, low stern voice, at him about it. And i know he knows it's wrong just by the how he acts when i get home and get close to the offensive pile! He'll slink out of the room!

Problem is this, i have a dog door as wells as food and water bowls that replenish themselves. I've read about dog foods and feel like i know which are better and which aren't and i have a good kind so i don't know why he goes so much. My other dog does just fine and never goes in the house. I know some of you will say to take away the automatic feeder and i guess i could do that if you guys think that could be the problem.

The other thing is i have never once caught him in the act, he's sneaky!

So i'm at a loss with this guy!

As far as clipping his nails, that's an old picture although what's the secret to cutting black nails? It makes me nervous i'll go too short!!

Use a flashlight to see the quick on black nails one nail at a time. You may need to work those nails daily - little tiny snips- to move those quicks back. Or go to a groomer, it's very inexpensive and important to a dogs health and comfort.

What kind of food are you feeding? Does it have a name? If you share the name we can tell you whether it's a kind which results in lots of poop and recommend an easier brand. EVO, for example results in small poop once or twice a day because the food is absorbed and not just passed through.

This is a classic statement we see often here: "And i know he knows it's wrong just by the how he acts when i get home and get close to the offensive pile! He'll slink out of the room! "

Your dog is reacting to your bad vibrations on seeing the accident. He does NOT know why you're upset, only that you are. He slinks out of the room because he's afraid of you.

Pup needs toilet training. Keep him on leash with you when home, and gate him in a room when you're not home. There are many posts here on how to train a dog and you've been given good information in many responses above.

Min Pins are notoriously hard to potty train.

I would take away the automatic feeder, at least until he is potty trained.

I would confine him when he is not under your direct supervision. Use a leash, connect him to you when you are home, so he cannot sneak away.

I feed him the Kirklands (Costco) brand.

I'll have to take away the auto feeder but why do you think it's just the poo he does inside? No accidents with pee. Is there any rhyme or reason for that?

Purely conjecture as Duce can't tell us why.... but I will take a stab...

So how clean are you keeping the outdoor area where the dogs are supposed to potty. IF the yard is full of Kramer poo, Deuce may feel he needs to go someplace else, not previously dumped upon by Kramer?

leash walk your dog. go to a nearby park or open space area, a fire road or a dirt lot....your problems will end.

LOL joepyeweed!! I clean the yard once a week, which is probably not enough if you look at it like that. I'm going to get rid of the auto feeder and try cleaning the yard daily. Maybe even take him for walks like you all say, but that may just put me in the dog owners hall of fame so you guys better just watch out!!! I'll update you on the progress or lack thereof!

cleaning the yard daily is probably not necessary, but maybe try twice a week, in essence doubling what you are doing now.

Of course if you have a huge yard, this may not even be an issue.

If you were to prioritize, I would say the walking is going to help the most, tying the dog to you to prevent sneaking off is next, then a set feeding schedule (rather than autofeed) would be next important, and the cleaning of the yard is probably least important.

If you do all of those things in combination... I would be sure that you would see some positive results.
