Choosing paint color to complement woodtrim???

This is my first post, though I have been reading and learning from the GW forums for a couple of years. I started in the bathroom forum when doing a bathroom remodel, but have really enjoyed the decorating forum the most. I am constantly amazed by what all of you accomplish in your homes. This is a great place to learn new things!

On to my question.... in various postings I have read how certain paint colors complement or clash with wood trim. Now that I am contemplating painting our kitchen, I am having trouble finding the various bits of advice that you guys have given to each other regarding paint colors and wood trim. Is there a rule of thumb that you use for choosing paint colors so that they don't clash with the wood trim?? For example, if the wood has a yellow or orange undertone...what colors should one stay away from and what colors would look best? What about red toned wood? I would so appreciate having this advice in one place to help me as I move forward in this project. Which, honestly, is overwhelming to me as I don't feel confident in my ability to pick colors. We have an old house, and 95% of the wood trim is original; and in my opinion, it does not want to be painted. (Really, it speaks to me!)

Thank you. I know I will get great advice from this forum!
