Stacking width

I know almost nothing about curtains and drapes. My home has blinds, verticals and pleated shades only.

After building for about 3 years, it's finally time to decorate!

I have some large windows in the great room of my cabin. (and unfortunately no pics to share right now.) I'm thinking of getting Restoration Hardware vintage velvet double width drapes. They are 100 inches wide and will be hung on rings.

I'd like to stack them completely off the windows. How much room do you think they would take? I'm thinking a 14' rod would give me about 18" on each side. Is that enough? I could go a little longer if needed but I don't want to go completely from wall to wall.

Since the drapes will be 96" long, I'm also thinking a 1.25 inch rod would look better than the 7/8" one.

Thanks for your help! I'll try to get pics this weekend.
