anything totally wrong with layout?

hi everyone,

i don't know why but i'm a bit nervous about posting my cabinet layout here but i've learned so much from all your postings i thought i might hate myself if i don't. i really like the layout but i want to know if there is anything obviously wrong with the layout that i'm missing.

here's some information. the kitchen is aprox. 11' by 21' with 8' ceiling. the door next to the frig goes to the side yard and the door next to the desk goes to the laundry room. i do need a desk in the kitchen because we don't have room for an office (until the kids go to college...which is quite a few years from now!) plus i like having the kids work on the computer where i can see what is going on.

the upper corner cabinets between the oven and sink are just open shelves. i'm not sure if this would look funny or not but i'm not sure i would like an angled cabinet. i guess i could also go with a door that folds open so that i can access everything. my thought on the open cabinet was that this wall seemed heavy.

i'm planning on white/cream shaker cabinets with virginia mist granite or soapstone. i've thought about a walnut butcher block for the island and desk or another granite to warm things up. we are casual and want something that will be comfortable to live in.

thanks for any thoughts, suggestions you have. really appreciate it and all the information i've already learned from all of you! thanks so much, lisa

p.s. sorry i thought i figured out how to post the picture in the note...the picture was there but then it kept giving me an error message. here is a link to the layouts. thanks again.

Lisaabby, I am NO PRO, but I think it might help to see the actual list of componetry/layout from the KD. also- are you doing slab faces on only the top drawer and doing 5 pc drawer heads on the lower drawers? that may be an inaccuracy due to the program, but I wasn't sure...

Where do you plan to keep your dishes? If it's in the upper cabinets between the sink and range, then I'd consider moving the dishwasher to the other side of the sink so you don't have to walk back and forth.

Do you have a bird's-eye view with measurements?

    ideagirl2 - yes i do. i'll post that now.

mcmjilly - yes, not too convenient but i plan on keeping the dishes in an island drawer across from the dishwasher. i am pretty sure there is more than enough room to have both the drawer and dw open but it is on my 'to do' list to confirm. thanks for reminding me!

brian - i'm not sure if i have a componetry/layout from the cabinet maker. i'll ask if that is something i can get. what does this include? all the drawers will be the same design...maybe it's a software thing but i will be sure to confirm. thanks for observing that!

I would make the base cabinets (along the window/sink wall) 30" deep so that you don't have to get a counter-depth refrigerator.

Where do you have the trash: to the left of the sink?

Where will the microwave go? In the island?

huango thank you for the suggestion. if the window/sink wall are 30" deep then is it strange if the cooktop wall is not 30" deep? what are the other advantages and/or disadvantages to a 30" deep cabinet besides size of frig?

the trash is to the left of the sink. yes, a sharp drawer microwave for the island.

I don't think it's strange for one line of counter to be deeper than another. It's kind of like when people have counter-height peninsulas--the peninsulas are much wider than the counter they're attached to, and that looks fine. Also, having that deeper counter, you could actually have kind of a "step shelf" all along the back of it if you could find one that looked good--it could hold decorations/knickknacks if you have those in the kitchen, or spices or what have you. Or alternately, the deep counter lets you store things like KitchenAid mixers on the counter while still leaving you plenty of workspace.

Is there going to be seating on the other side of that island? If so, could you get those cabinets made so that the doors slide instead of opening out? That would let you access the cabinets without having to move the stools/chairs out of the way.

    thanks ideagirl2!

i just researched on gw the wider counter and i think that is a very good idea. sounds like i would need to move the upper cabinets forward too so that i can reach.

yes there is seating on the other side of the island. i will inquire about the sliding doors. very practical suggestion...thanks!
