Creative juices flowing

I've gotten brave in my 40s. I'm sewing and upholstering even though I don't really know what I'm doing. Now, I'm building!

Been looking at Ana White's blog after fruitless Craigslist searches for a new bed. When we decided to go with a California King size, I knew I'd have to make a headboard if I wanted one I could afford. She has plans for a knock-off of the Pottery Barn Mason that we liked. I distressed the heck out the some pine, stained and waxed it. Not bad! I really wanted to do a gray wash, but DH liked the stained look so I compromised. I used Zar, which did a great job. No conditioning of the pine needed with that stuff.

This was very easy, so if this is your style I highly recommend trying it yourself. Makes you feel pretty good :)

Also, for those after crisp sheets, I splurged on some from Thomas Lee LTD (on sale + 10% coupon and free shipping). So worth it! They are wonderful! Not as crisp as the old Wamsutta Supercale, but lovely all the same.

The New Bed!

Making something is addictive. I think I'm going to make beds for my two boys after I paint their room.

Thanks for the affirmation! I'm all glow-y inside :)

I believe you but not because of how it looks. You could fool anyone into thinking it was store bought. You got pro results and should continue being brave ;)

Beautiful! You've done an awesome job. Thanks so much for the site recommendation also. I'm planning to make a headboard for my sons room out of an old door and this gives me some great ideas on how to finish it!

You all are great :) I can't wait to start on my next project. I have a different chair in there that I'm going to reupholster.

It's funny to look at that photo and how the things I've purchased, from as far back as 10 years and as recently as a couple of weeks ago, go together. That raspberry chair is the oldest and bought the rug about 4 years ago. The duvet is a clearance item from Pottery Barn. Maybe not a popular color combo, but this room makes me happy.

Looks wonderful, I think you've been bitten by the wood bug! Keep those wonderful projects going.

Ana's site is so inspiring! I have been woodworking for 25 years and you can do it, too! Her plans are so easy to follow! Your bed is beautiful!

That is just beautiful, and to my mind a good example of a look that's not limited to any one 'trend'. Congratulations!

    Impressed to say the least!

Do you mind if I ask how much it cost to make it?

bird lover, the lumber came to about $70 (before tax) because I ended up with a 1x6 I didn't use (I'm going to make a shelf out of it). I also bought nails, wood filler, and stain so that upped it to around $100. I already had wood glue and I used a wax I had on hand for the protective coat.

Waaaaaay better than Pottery Barn's asking price of $800 and you get to choose the finish. Not that I would have bought it from them, since their stain didn't suit me.
I would have been hard-pressed to find something on Craigslist for the price AND I would have missed out on the feeling of building something that actually functioned as intended :)

Kudos to you for your DIY bravery! Great result and I know you will cherish it forever since you've put part of yourself into it. A way different feeling than just buying something. Keep on with the DIY if you enjoy it. :-)

msjee, be sure to post yours. I loved seeing all of the different finishes and tweaks people used on the blog. Like Oceanna said, seeing others take a leap inspires others to do it, too.
