Best deck coating?

Over a 15 or so year period, what would be the easiest way to maintain a cedar deck and stairs looking decent in the Seattle area where the temps are fairly moderate, with inoccasional snow but tons of rain (algae) -- translation: the least amount of work?

Would it be:

- Semi-solid stain?

- Solid stain?

- Paint?

- Or?

I have dogs, but nothing over 30 lbs. I try to keep their nails shor but I'm not perfect. The summer before last I used a "duck-something" oil based stain. It didn't last and it bred algae something fierce, resulting in a couple of nasty falls for me.

Late last summer I used a semi-solid Cabot stain (also tried another brand). I switched to Cabot (water based) because an oil based stain was breeding too much slippery algae. To prep the deck, I used a deck wash/stripper chemical that took out all the color; I also used a product specifically for combatting algae. I scrubbed it with a brush. The wood looked almost new. The deck is now peeling and about 50% bald and breeding algae already again.

The deck is only about 4 years old.

I don't care if the wood grain shows or not. I don't need it to be gorgeous. I just need it to be durable, protected against the weather and the dogs, to not breed algae too much, and because I'm not getting any younger I'm looking for the least amount of work in the long run versus the cost.

Can you please advise?

Thanks!

Drift on over to www.restor-a-deck.com,get the two part RAD system. After your deck is completly striped to bare wood,in good dry weather, I would put on twp 116 or try Ken's new stuff.

The water base stuff is not working out, dont put paint on,or regular siding finish, dont use anything with thompsons on the lable.

All the high grade outdoor finish products like TWP have a mildew stop already in them as well as water/uv protection.

    Thank you, John.

The Restoree-a-deck looks good. (you forgot the "e" in restore, but I guessed)

The web site on TWP says it lasts 3-5 years on *vertical* siding. Am I still looking at redoing horizontal decking every year?

    Do you recommend two coats?

What is "Ken's new stuff" please?

Is TWP oil based? I switched to a water-based stain (Cabot) after two bad falls on algae. Algae eats oil. The Cabot hasn't lasted but that may be my prep? It has been better about algae and I haven't slipped or fallen. How long does TWP's mildew resistance last?

Sorry bout that,Ken is selling WoodZotic finish some stuff he devoloped with the help of an ol twp guy. Its on that same site a lot of Folks over here have tried and liked it.

TWP recomends wet on wet that is put the second coat on right away, its resin base finish. The prep has little to do with it Cabot product will fail regardless.

You might do a search on this site for posts from me regarding twp.

Cedar is soft and pron to mildew its not all that great a choice for decking, anyway I build coats with twp 100 series you guys in the NW have a strong green mafia going on so you might have to use the 500 series it works about the same just takes longer to set up. Building coats can be done with twp and not done with any other finish I have tried. The more coats the longer it takes to set up. Building coats takes good weather and work, the work part is what most Folks dont want to do.

My own deck out back of Butler Manor got the last coat of twp finish about 6 years ago its just now showing signs of needing a recoat. There is no need to strip this product before recoat but I probley will give it an oxalic acid wash to dry it out a little. If you do use Ken's rad deal no need for the oxalic the second part has the equal in it.

My deck has major overhanging trees,we get all sorts of different weather and things tend to rot over here in a rapid nature if it works here it will work there.

Thanks, John. Wow -- six years? I'll bet you don't have dogs across it several times a day?

Yeah, decks up here stay soggy for 9 months of the year. It's a real problem. I'm tempted to just paint the darned thing.

Even worst I have three big Cats in a chase with each other every day when I come home for the 4 o clock feed.

Paint is probley the worst choice for a wet thing going on like you guys have x 100 with cedar for a lot of resons.
