Galley kitchen layout help, please

We've got a fairly small kitchen, where what we need most is to get actual venting over the stove.

Very short form of intro list: 1 main cook, frequently other people, including cleanup happening at the same time (2 adults, 2 teens). Real cooking, including sous vide & other fun things.

Kitchen footprint: can't move walls, doors, mostly because eldest teen is in 11th grade & there's no way we can afford the disruption or the cost. We've played with those ideas & haven't come up with an idea that was worth it (and, yes, GardenWeb helped too, but it's been awhile).

So, plan--6" to a square. I didn't try to include fillers & such.

Ideal layout is pretty subjective and about patterns of use and personal preferences but I would tend to want the fridge easily accessible and not to have people walking through where I'm cooking to get drinks or snacks. If I'm reading the plan correctly I would think about putting the fridge where the drawer stack is to the left of the sink (added bonus it shields the sight line of the sink if filled with dishes or any other mess). I would also consider moving the stove to the other side of the window so it is better protected from traffic (if you get a lot of traffic from the driveway entrance through the kitchen then that's a different story). If storage behind door to porch serves as pantry then moving fridge also makes pretty good sense in in relation to zones. Other bonus is the really long counter run this layout creates - lots of room for helpers out of your immediate cooking area. No question it would be tight around the sink but I think that might be the lesser evil (for me - hate the clean-up anyway so why not make it a bit more miserable). Good luck.

That's actually where I want the stove, but, alas, the cook hates the idea. 1 1/2 years of working on that & she's still adamant that she hates the idea of people being able to walk along the street & see her when she's at the stove, so can't do that.

Fridge: didn't want it directly across from stove, but that's a good point.

Fridge & Stove positioning seem to define this kitchen (well, that's not unique!)--the problem I fight with on the fridge is that there's not that much light coming into the kitchen. Most of it (OK, this is probably weird) is from the door in the mudroom & the dining room; some from the door to the porch...well, and some from the window. Just not most of it because of the porch & how the house is positioned & trees & such. The fridge is a huge block to light moving--we've mocked it up in other places & it really affects things badly. If I can't have the stove in that spot, at least I get rid of the fridge somewhere it can't do damage!

Totally agree with hating cleanup. That's my job...
