Test Kits?

I have a question. I have a "Pool Pals" test kit that my builder left for us. We tested on Friday and our Alkalinity was at 180 but when we took a sample into Leslie's about 15 minutes later, they got 140. They had me add 1qt acid to my 17,000 gallon pool.

I tested again yesterday and still got 180? I went ahead and added the other 3 quarts in. According to the test kit, that isn't enough, but I'm afraid to add too much. It called for 3 gallons.

Is it normal for the testing between us and them to differ so much?

Did we not put enough acid(leslie's recommendation) in to bring it down the first time?

What is the best test kit to use?

Thank You

Dawna

Wow, that is a really high TA number! First as a general comment you're going to want to get a nice drop-based test kit. See the link below for a lot of valuable info on test kits and testing.

Now, what is your PH looking like? If it's normal, adding all that acid is going to cause problems because it makes your PH drop too. Don't add any more acid until you get your PH back up to normal. You'll have to aerate your water to raise the PH back to normal without affecting TA. Once it gets back to normal then you can add more acid to lower the TA and then aerate again, repeat this until your TA is in the normal range.

After that start a good testing regimen so you catch things before they get that far out of range.

Do you have a vinyl pool? What is your PH?

I have a Pebble Fina Plaster Pool with a salt system.
My PH is right at 7.2 today according to leslies, but my kit came out at 7.6?
My TA came out 130 this morning, but leslies came out 110.
    My CYA is 90
My Salt systems tell me it is at 3500ppm, but Leslies says it's 4450?
My Chlorine is off the charts though.

When I took my water in they apologized for not telling me on Friday to turn off my Chlorinator after putting in the PhosFree(my phosphates were too high)while I ran the filter for 48 hours after adding it. That's why my Chlorine is too high. That would have been a good piece of information to give me before I left the store.
They gave me something to lower the chlorine and told me to turn off my chlorinator until it burns off.
They also say my numbers may be off due to the high chlorine.
But still, all of their tests seem to be slightly higher than mine.
Could my test not be reading properly or maybe theirs isn't?

Go to Troublefree pool and read, read, read. If I hadn't read about the BBB method before going to Leslie's, they would have sold me all kinds of things! I went, thinking that they would tell me what I needed without trying to take me, and I was wrong. After seeing how they like to sell, I decided to say no and I've been able to take care of my own pool with the kindness of the helpful folks on that website. They make it all so easy! I didn't need all the expensive "fixes" that Leslie's wanted to sell me.

Also becareful of buying stuff like chemicals at Leslies that you can't return when you walk through the out doors. I find that to be crazy for baking soda and chlorine that you can get at Walmart.

Alkalinity is a measure of the "buffer capacity" of your pool. Also, whats your Calcium at? Is it real high...you might need to sequester that calcium to help reduce your Alkalinity.

To decrease your Alkalinity, you should turn off your pumps and let the acid sit at the bottom of the pool concentrated for awhile by itself for a time period so that it will force the buffer equation to the other side. If you put it in dillute or let it dillute quickly it may lower your pH without having as big effect on the alkalinity.

The reason most people get a nice test kit is because the pool store readings vary so wildly. One person on TFP actually took samples of the same water to multiple places as an experiment and sure enough the results were all over the place. If you get a high quality test kit and test it yourself, the results will be much more reliable.

When you say your chlorine is too high, are you testing both FC (free chlorine) and CC (combined chloramines)? If so, please report both numbers here.

==My Salt systems tell me it is at 3500ppm, but Leslies says it's 4450?==

Don't depend on your readout for the salt level, they're unreliable. Get some test strips for that (salt is about the only test that strips work OK on, all others should be drop-based).

One more question- how does your pool look, feel and smell? Any problems there? If not I wouldn't get too worried, you don't have to fix any of these numbers overnight.

I was going to order the test kit at the trouble free pool website but I did not see the little secure order lock thing on the webpage. Has anyone ordered this testkit and is the site secure with cc info & such?

I used Paypal to purchase it and did not have any security issues. In that case, Paypal stores the cc info.

    My Calcium is 270
My Chlorine today is now down to 5ppm since I turned off the chlorinator.
I still have a problem with scale on my pool.
My pool is clear. It sparkles. I have some calcium build-up here and there.
It smells fine, but I can taste the salt when I'm in the pool.

Are you sure that the scale you see is not salt? Does it wash off with water?

Your CYA is high! Otherwise, it doesn't seem like things are that bad to me. What is the problem exactly? Just pool a little acid the next time you add it to lower your alkalinty a little more... Stop adding CYA and hope for some hot days to burn what you have off. Add some fresh water whenever you can to try and dillute your CYA. Don't add any chlorine products that add more CYA!

The chlorine will come down within a few days.

Oh, and stop tasting your pool...hehehe.

Your pool should taste a little salty (about the same as a human tear), but if it tastes very salty you probably have too much salt in it. As Barco said you may be seeing salt buildup rather than scale. In this case I'm tending to believe the Leslie reading of 4450. I wouldn't count on the readout from your SWG. About the only way to reduce the salt level is a partial drain & refill. Before doing that I'd try to get some good test strips and test it yourself to verify it.

Your CYA is running a little high, normal for SWG is between 60 and 80. With higher CYA you also need to have a higher FC number, so your reading of 5 is actually pretty close to where you want it to be. According to Chem Geek on TFP (a guy that really knows his stuff): "Most saltwater chlorine generator (SWG) pools appear to prevent algae at a minimum FC level of 4.5% of the CYA level" So for a CYA reading of 90 you should maintain a minimum CYA of 4 ppm.

If you do a partial drain & refill to reduce the salt content you will also lower your CYA, so that should take care of both problems. You may still have to contend with that high TA number afterwards- test it after the refill and see where it is.

Quoting myself: "So for a CYA reading of 90 you should maintain a minimum CYA of 4 ppm."

That was a typo, it should say "minimum FC of 4 ppm".

Today is the first day my numbers looked good. PH,Alk and chlorine all look good. Chlorine is down to 4.5. Leslie's told me that my CYA is a little high because of the conditioner we added about a week ago and just to wait for it to come down. I think that my ALK was high for too long and now one of my dreaded shoe prints are coming back due to calcium deposits adhering on the bottom of the pool. The Plaster Company told me that they would come back if we didn't watch our pool chemistry. I guess we'll be sanding that print off this weekend. Oh well. I think I'm getting better at this whole chemical thing. I'm going to wait about a week more and then take another sample into leslies and have them test again. I did order the salt test strips. I'll test with those when they come in.
At this point, I think it's best for me to test everyday until I feel comfortable.
Thanks for all of your help
