Which Dyson?

Those of you who are Dyson fans, how did you decide which model to get? Have you tried out different models in person?

I just bought the special Target model. It's red and gray! I love it. I believe it is the original DC-07 just in red instead of yellow.

Great buy as Target had them for $349 last week. I have an Oreck. Could not believe what the Dyson picked up this week. I thought the Oreck was doing a pretty good job and am not so sure about that after having to empty the Dyson several times since I got it. The dirt and dog hair in the thing on the first pass was amazing. It's leveled off quite a bit and I really do feel like the floor is cleaner because of the Dyson.

I have the DC17 and love it. If you have pets you NEED this one.

I wish I bought the Dyson about 2.75 years ago but I listened to consumer reports and bought the Sears with Direct Drive. I hate changing the bags and keep buying bags. I think I would have preferred to wear a mask and empty the cup outside. I was afraid emptying the cup would bother my allergies.

I still don't have an answer....

Is a 17 better than a 15, which is better than a 14, which is better than an 07? Or doesn't it work that way?

Is the ball type any easier to handle than the non-ball types?

And let me throw in another one... I'm coming from a Kirby. Will I think this is heavy?

Nope, tons lighter than a Kirby.

From what I can tell, basically the motor is going to be the same, the numbers dictate it's features. The 14 has the telescope reach, the 15 is the ball, and the 17 seems to have just a slightly updated design. Again I have the DC14 Animal, it comes with a turbo head which is great for stairs, and a low reach head. I do not really see how the ball would improve on mobility, it's pretty effortless but I would try it and see what it's like compared to the other, and see if it's worth the extra $50. My mom has the DC7 and I don't like that wand as much, it isn't the telescope reach which I think is definitely worth the extra $50.

    Good review, Mpwdmom.

Ojoy, thanks -- I figured it would be lighter. Everything is, right? My Kirby also STINKS which is another way I get punished for vacuuming. And I can't figure out why but it's just not picking up like it was. I'd thought about running it into the shop but then I thought maybe I'd put that $ toward something else.

Thanks for the information about the features. So the 15 and the 17 don't have the telescope reach? And that's a feature you really like?

Oceanna, I have the DC17 too and wouldn't trade it for the world. The suction is unbelieveable! I'll bet if you do decide on buying one you'll not regret it. I had a workman in the house today and he asked if he could use mine to clean up his mess and he was sold. This guy is the picky type and he said he was going out to buy one for himself this weekend.

In order to empty my canister, I simply hold it over the trash can and push a button. No muss, no fuss. My hands never come close to the dirt.

I have the purple animal. I've had it almost 2 years and really like it. I know it will sound weird to say but I enjoy dumping out my canister and seeing all the dog hair I've collected. :-)I use the telescoping wand for something every time I vacuum. For ex. it's great on stairs, along baseboards, to do my blinds, windowsills, etc. I would say that it's my favorite feature.

I think the telescope is on DC14 and higher. (So the earliest DC 7 model is probably the only one without it.) I use it every time I vacuum.

fussy chicken - I too love dumping my canister! I like to check out how much I have picked up in each room. I have even tested it and re-vacuumed to see if it's just what you will always pull out of the carpet. But it will hardly pick up anything the second time around. It really is a sickness - too bad it doesn't apply to dusting. We just bought a house with a central vac and I would rather use my Dyson.

I have the Dyson Animal and Nope I don't like it.... Same reasons Hoyamom said, I would rather toss a bag than have dust flying.... and the suction is so much I can hardly push the thing! and yes it's heavy for me....

    Oceanna,

I'm a huge Dyson fan! We've never owned a better vacuum cleaner. We have the Dyson DC 15 Animal model. It has the ball (the DC 17 Model does not). I believe it is termed "Animal" because it has attachments, such as a special brush which work on pet hair. While it has incredible suction, I do not find the DC 15 to be overly agitating on the carpet. It gets up every last pet hair, and my carpets truly look like they've been professionally cleaned when I'm done vacuuming. I love the fact that they have no belts or bags. It is easy to dispose of dust, and when I do so, I always put the canister about half-way into my kitchen waste bin, and I don't have problem with the dust. I'm allergic to dust, by the way. I probably sound like a commercial, but I truly love the Dyson. It's so good that we may choose not to purchase a central vac, even though we had it roughed into our new home.

As for weight, it's not super light. It weighs about 20 pounds. But I'm only 100 pounds myself, and I carry it upstairs to do the vacuuming up there and back down again without trouble.

I went through the same process of trying to distinguish among the various models when we bought it last fall. I'm including a Dyson Comparison link that you might like to read.

I've had the yellow Dyson for over three years--actually gave the initial one to my Mom last year and bought myself a new one. It is absolutely the best vacuum (including the heavy Kirby) that I've ever used and it's easy to use. I can't believe the dirt that is removed from my carpet and rugs.

I empty the canister in a trash bag in the garage, with the top held tightly around it, and have no problem with the dust.

Funny that this post came up... After having both of my Walmart cheapie vacuums (one for upstairs and one for down) die at the same time I made up my mind to finally buy a good vac. I am now the proud owner of a new Dyson AND a new Kirby. I ordered a Dyson Thursday nite. A friend asked me why I had not bought a Kirby and so I went on line to research the two and it seems as if the Kirby wins hands down. I found a new one on ebay so I am not really paying that much more than the Dyson. I know they are much heavier but everyone I have talked to that owns one says it still is easier to vacuum with. Now I have to return the Dyson and I am going to get hit with shipping charges. Anyone want to buy a new Dyson in Connecticut??? Not opened, in fact, it is still sitting on the front steps from the UPS man! That's what I get for jumping too fast - I do it to myself everytime.

I vacuum every week and I don't have any pets - is it weird that my can fills up so much that the fibers/dust get stuck up inside and I have to dig it out? Maybe it's my carpet - too much shedding? LOL I take the can and dump it in the garbage like demifloyd with the trash can lid down to prevent too much of the dust from flying. I do think it cleans very well though. Mine is the yellow one.

I have had my Dyson for about 3 yrs now (the Animal DC14.. no pivoting ball). I bought it after killing the third vacuum in a year. It is flat out the best vacuum I've used for pet hair. I had an older model eureka that also picked up the dog hair very well-- but every third sunday the thing clogged. It was very frustrating.

There are limitations though-- it is GREAT on carpet but I am less thrilled with it on hardwood or tile. I am fine with that though. My sister turned me onto this great rubber broom squeegy thing (I think it is called "onesweep") that is terrific for getting hair up on flat surfaces without flying fur balls.

It is amazing how much it gets out of carpet-- no rubbing your hand on the carpet and finding more hairs... and as one of the previous posters noted, it makes the carpet/rug look brand new. I am amazed (and a little grossed out) that the color actually changes after I vacuum (I have two big shedders).

I have the animal but I don't use the attachment-- I use a shopvac on the furniture. Just an old habit.

I would love to try the dyson with the pivoting ball but have not yet.

It is a little ackward to get up the stairs because it is very bottom heavy but it isn't all that heavy.

I can see why some would think it is gross to empty the canister but I find it pretty rewarding. You don't want to be too quick about emptying the canister-- definitely want to lower it into the garbage can-- and it definitely helps to empty it with every vacuum-- or even mid vacuum if you have a large area (or lots of dirt/fur). Don't let the canister fill up past the filter core thingy.

I'd definitely buy another-- I don't have a lot of carpeting/rugs now so I won't get the pivoting ball model but I would jump on it if i had more.

I have the Dyson slim - I bought it a few weeks ago at Kohls - it was on sale and then I had an extra 30% off coupon, so it only cost about $200. The slim is light and works great going from surface to surface. I have tons of wood floors, area rugs, and carpet.LOVE it

    Thanks, everyone.

Jan, I didn't know it doesn't need a belt either -- you mean no more sitting on the carpet cussing as I try to slice and dice my loooong hair off from around the beater bar? I truly hate that and I have to do it way too often, probably because of the length of my hair.

Jan, thanks for the link! That's really helpful. :)

Lynn, good luck. Be sure you're doing what's right for you before you let one go.

OK Oceanna, I am in deep doodoo now. I went over to the Appliance blog and did a search and from what I read, everyone swears by their Miele. I may just own three new vacuums by Sunday.

    Hahahaha! Lynn, you're funny!

Hey, the Kirby is a great vacuum, but they're heavy. Look at the specs on your Dyson... I weighed my Kirby today and it was around 25 lbs. Plus there's bags to change. Plus there's belts to burn and stink and break. And my Kirby stinks. So I'm going to try the Dyson. I hope you'll be happy with one of your new vacs and I envy you being able to order two!

mauimere-- I am curious, do you have pets? The biggest issue I have on flat surfaces is that the fur blows about the floor. I can get it eventually-- but that's just a game I don't dig playing.

I'd definitely consider a new one if the slim addresses that problem.

Oceanna, no clogs and no belts. I really think you'll be happy with it. It maneuvers pretty well on the floor too.

This is the article I read about the Kirby.

    http://reviews.ebay.com/DYSON-OR-KIRBY-VACUUM-Which-is-the-best-vacuum_W0QQugidZ10000000003855053

Here is the summary of the article. Pretty convincing to me:
    CONCLUSION-
    1. Winner of the Test #1 Best Vacuum not to Clog - KIRBY VACUUM
The Kirby vacuum had almost twice the size of suction piping (see pictures in test #1). The Dyson tubing at its smallest point measures right at 1 3/8 inches, the Kirby tubing at its smallest point measured 2 1/4 inches nearly a inch larger.
    2. The winner Test #2 The most Airflow and Vacuum Power is = KIRBY VACUUM
The Kirby had over 3 times the power and airflow as the Dyson when testing it with the airflow meter.
    3. Winner of Test 3 full of dirt = KIRBY VACUUM
Full of dirt on the dirt meter the Dyson pulled a 2.8 and the Kirby pulled a 5.9 with a bag full of dirt. The Kirby did loose power full of dirt (pulled a 7 with a empty bag) but was still almost twice as powerful full of dirt. The Dyson pulled a 2.8 empty and a 2.8 full so Dyson was right it did not loose any power as it filled with dirt.
    4. Winner of Test #4 Best Cleaner = KIRBY VACUUM
In our dirt test Kirby dominated. It pulled up almost double of the dirt that the Dyson did. The Dyson pulled up 40% of its dirt in this test and the Kirby pulled up 75% of its dirt in the same test.
    5. Winner of Test #5 Â Reliability = KIRBY VACUUM
The Dyson made of plastic and the Kirby made of metal. We have personally seen a 25 year average lifespan with a Kirby. We have to pack the Dysons with much more bubble than Kirbys when shipping to avoid breakage. According to " a leading consumer products magazine" the Kirby ranked #1 in reliability and with the least amount of repairs needed. The ranked it based upon 134,000 reader responses and ranked it based upon a point system. The lower the points the more reliable. The Kirby was #1 with only 4 points while the average vacuum they tested got a 10.25 So the Kirby was not only #1 but much more reliable than the average vacuum tested.
    6. Winner of Test #6 - Weight & Ease of Vacuuming = DYSON VACUUM
The Dyson was a little over 5 lbs lighter than the Kirby when we weighted them on our shipping scales. Ease of vacuum the Kirby was better but with on board tools and lower carrying weight the Dyson won this contest. When we tested how long it took to use the tools it took the Dyson 19 seconds and the Kirby 25 seconds when we tested it.
    7. Winner of Test #7 Â Tools and Accessories = KIRBY VACUUM
The Kirby won this contest because it had about 3 times the tools and accessories as the Dyson.
    8. Winner of Test #8 Â Filtration = KIRBY VACUUM
Test #8 was very close. They actually said they had the same filtration .1 of a micron. However the concern we had with the Dyson is it had 7 different seals (they were not very tight seals) that air and dirt could possibly leak out. Kirby had 2 seals but were very tight. When "a leading Consumer Products Magazine" tested emissions (filtration) they ranked them the same rating.
    9. Test # 9 Marketing and Cool Factor = DYSON VACUUM
The Dyson dominated this test. IMHO Dyson is genius when it comes to marketing. I personally feel that Dyson did not create the best vacuum but they created a vacuum that would lead us to believe it was the best vacuum. Visually it seems to do a very good job and looks very cool.
    10. Winner of Test #10 Â Suction and Vacuum Seal = KIRBY VACUUM
The Kirby dominated the Suction test. The Dyson only had 1.5 lbs of pull before the seal was broken and the Kirby had 12 lbs of pull before the seal was broken. The air coming into the vacuum on the Dyson appeared to come from on top of the carpet. Where on the Kirby the air coming to the vacuum appeared to be coming from under the carpet. Also the Dyson had great suction on one side of the power nozzle and no suction on the other side while the Kirby had suction all the way across.

Sorry Dyson loversÂ..The King of Vacuums is the THE KIRBY

    Thank You,

    Dustin Chaffin
    Great-Vacs Manager

BUT, as always, because I tend to be impatient and impulsive, I had bid on a new Sentria. Upon further research, like this article, I find the older Diamond model is better. So I am patiently waiting and hoping someone overbids me before tomorrow. Otherwise I will be returning the Dyson, listing the Sentria on ebay to resell it, and ordering the Kirby Diamond - or maybe the Miele??? I could always open a vacuum store the way I am going.

I know this is lengthy, and I am sure you are sick of "talking" with me about this but, my husband said - he doesn't care which one I get, just as long as he doesn't have to hear the word vacuum for a very long time.

So, please help me!!! And I promise to not say another word, only listen, until I have made my FINAL purchase!!!!

PS. I did buy the Dyson canister. Anyone want to tell me that they hate theirs so I will feel better about returning it.

Thanks, Lynn, I've seen that. But... there has to be some reason we see so many happy Dyson owners online, I figure. I hope you'll be very happy with whatever you end up deciding. The answer is that Miele, Kirby and Dyson are all good machines. I doubt anyone here has owned all three.

Funkyart -- no hair around the beater bar to untangle? That would be SO sweet, since my hair is to my waist, so even one hair gives a lot of mileage in the tangling department.

I've had the original yellow Dyson for 4-5 years now. And I still love it. To me, walking out to the garage and pulling the lever to dump the dog hair/dirt mess into a garbage can is simple. And no more buying bags! I would buy it again in a heartbeat. But Oceanna, it does get hair around the beater bar- sorry! I just worked on that last week. However, I don't get clogs like I used to with my old electrolux and some other brand that I can't remember.

    Hi,

I have been through several vaccums in the past years. I had a Hoover that was highly rated at CR - it was the pits. I then switched to a cheap Sanyo that the guy who was fixing my Hoover recommended. It was ok but the bag were difficult to find and then a major part broke and I didn't feel like searching the world for the replacement part.

I read tons of good reviews about the Dyson and bought one last year - the yellow one. I love it! I have a black lab, a cat, a 4 year old and we live close to the woods and hike alot. My house gets very dirty and this thing picks up everything.

I should have gotten the Animal but sticker shock got the best of me. Next one is the Animal for sure.

    last modified: 11 years ago

I have had the basic yellow Dyson for over 5 years. I love it! There is something incredibly satisfying about watching the canister fill with dirt and dog hair.

Lynn - I have the old version of the canister Dyson. Mine does not have a motorized beater bar - I believe the canister version being sold now has it, which is an important improvement. Sorry to tell you, but I like my canister Dyson. I still prefer the upright for wall-to-wall carpeting, but the canister is better for area rugs and hard surfaces.

I could argue a few of the issues in the test you posted above, but since you are sending back your Dyson and have bought a Kirby, I won't. I will simply say that most people have a strong preference one way or the other for a bagged vacuum or a bagless. The Dyson is the obvious choice if you want a bagless.

I was saving up to buy an Animal, but then I found a pink DC07 on a Target endcap for $180 and bought that instead. That was about a year and a half ago. I'm very satisfied with it, and am glad that I didn't end up spending more for an Animal. The 07 does great with picking up cat hair from carpets and rugs (I have two cats). I'm not as thrilled with the performance on my hard surface floors -- that's something I'd definitely take a harder look at if buying at full price. It is a bit awkward and heavy to pull up and down stairs, as others said; it's not a big deal for me but would definitely be a problem for someone with less-than-optimal mobility or a distaste for lugging heavy things between floors on a regular basis.

My favorite part is not having to replace bags -- that is a beautiful, wonderful thing. Not only is it super-convenient, plus I get a perverse sense of accomplishment every time I empty out the cannister.

Should supplement my original post with the fact I've owned both a Kirby and a Dyson. In my experience, the Dyson wins hands down with the Kirby. It is an awesome product and you will not go wrong if you buy one.

    last modified: 11 years ago

I have owned Kirby and Dyson also, Dyson wins by a mile, maybe two! I do however think your hair will still get caught up in the spinning brush.

    last modified: 11 years ago

UpaLazyRiver -- thanks for speaking up... and why do you like Dyson better?

Caminic -- thanks also and why does Dyson win by a mile?

Prairiefox -- thanks for telling me about the hair/beater bar -- and Caminic, thanks for backing that up. Sigh. I guess the only way around that is a cannister vac.

Etoile -- I think it pays to have a vacuum on each floor if we can. When my mom died I kept her old vac on my bottom floor, where I don't mainly live. It's not a great vac but it keeps me from lugging one up and down the stairs and that's great. In fact if I buy a Dyson, I'll probably keep my Kirby downstairs.

I, too, have been through a lot of vacuums. That endless parade of vacuums stopped when I got a Kirby. The Kirby doesn't break when it encounters sticks and stones and nutshells and other such vacuum killers. How does the Dyson do with big things -- that stick or rock your dog hid just under the chair or bed ruffle that you don't see till it's too late? That nut shell your bird tossed on the floor? Does it pick up kibbles? Where does it draw the line?

Oceanna, go with the Animal Dyson. I have the DC15 Animal with ball. At first hubby and I were not going to pay that much for a vacuum, but realized it was a long overdue purchase. We also purchase the car kit and other attachments and love it.

We were definitely sold on our purchase when we were cleaning and found a spot where our dog had gagged out something. It was dried and left a stain...vacuumed with our Dyson stain and everything gone as if it it was never there.

Thinking Green this is the best purchase...no bags!

I've had both a Kirby & a Dyson. Holy carp the Kirby is not user friendly IMHO. I'm a big girl (almost 5'11") and I just couldn't see myself using it on a regular basis as my go to vac because it is so heavy.

Kirby now lives with XH and my purple Dyson and I are still together 4 or 5 years later, lol!

    last modified: 11 years ago

Justmee -- thanks. I'm leaning toward the DC15 at this point. I really like the no bags thing, and having animals is one of the reasons why, but being green is another, and let's face it convenience is another.

Acoreana, lol! Love the way you worded that. And thank you for saying you don't think the Kirby is that friendly. I agree, and moreso as I age. Kirby is a GREAT machine, tough as nails. But it's a better machine for someone younger than me I think. We'll see... I hope I like the Dyson as much as you all do!

Any words from any of you about the DC18 -- the slimline Dyson that only weighs about 15 lbs?

Any words from any of you about safety/stupidity of buying from eBay? How about eBay versus warrantees? Have any of you actually needed/used your warrantees?

We bought the most expensive Dyson--purple thinking more $$$ equals best, right?? Well, maybe BUT it was too clunky for us so we returned it got the SLIM and we LOVE It, LOVE it...never thought I would say I LOVED a small appliance but I do, I do...we have a dog that sheds like crazy--and a black appliqued rug--I use my Dyson everyday...couldn't be without.
Tuesday AM has a special value Dyson in the next advertised sale, May 6?? Limited quantities at each store..

    Oceanna,

I believe the Dysons (for sure the DC15 model we purchased 6 months ago) have five-year manufacturer warranties. I bought ours at Best Buy because I had a coupon.

We haven't needed to use the warranty, but we did need to call their service department the day we bought it because we were unsure of how a part of it was attached. Everything was fine, and we did get a real person on the phone on a weekend.

    Jan,

It's good to know you got a real person as I think I remember reports on epinions saying their customer service stinks. I think you're right about the 5-year warrantees... and the funny thing is I've seen 5, 3, and none on eBay. You know, I was in a Big Lots not long ago and they had a yellow model that was only about $200 and I thought about it but didn't buy it... and now I wish I had and I was thinking about going back to see if they have any.

    Poshspace,

I really am glad you reported on the Slim, thanks. I'm not getting any younger and my basic instincts say go for the lightest weight. I also like that it would take up less space in the closet.

But then I read in that dandy comparison chart that Jan posted above that it's shorter in the cord, shorter in the hose, smaller in the cup size, etc. So I'm thinking I'd be moving the plug all the time and having to empty it a lot more. Plus it's not as powerful at sucking as the other models. Those things haven't bothered you? I think it's really signifigant that you can compare it to the purple animal (15? 17?).

I looked at the Tuesday Morning site but there's nothing about a sale there.

I may be the only person who thought this.... When DH and I originally looked at sweepers we were in Sears and I thought the dyson's looked 'cheap' and breakable. The sales girl took the canister off, put it on the ground and started jumping on it. Told us it's made of kevlar. :) Needless to say I didn't do any research up until that point.
We have the purple DC14 (no ball). Love all the attachments it comes with and i don't think it's heavy.

After spending a year reading all the comments about Dysons (and not really believing all of them), I was able to purchase the new 2008 Dyson Slim (Total Access). I think the only difference between the older and newer versions is the newer one comes with more attachments.
My back, hip and legs prevented me from continuing with my Panasonic or Hoover. This vacuum is a joy to use. No pressure from pushing yet the suction is so great on it, that there are small area rugs that it won't even move on because the suction is so strong. It sucks up everything, moves around obstacles easily and the attachments are the best I have used since the old, old electroluxes.
There is a slight learning curve so that it doesn't fall over when you are extending the hose, and there is no light on the front of it but if it means having fun while I vacuum, this little machine is worth every penny.
Besides, my carpets are looking better and there is less dust in the house. I would recommend this to anyone who can no longer handle the weight of the normal vacuum, but wants the power of a bull. It has been one month now and I am enjoying it more everyday.

Thanks PCW. That's another glowing testimony. Guess doing my area rugs is out, huh? And... you don't miss having the beater bar thingy attachment... is that the "animal" thingy? And... you don't feel that the cord is too short or that the cup has to be emptied too often? Where did you buy it and do you mind my asking what you paid? Thanks.

Oceanna, at the time I bought mine, Target had the best price. Unfortunately, we don't have a Target here so I went to Sears and the man who was helping me got on the computer to varify Target's price and sold me one at the Target price. Can't beat that.

Thanks Mammie. Hmmm... I see Amazon has the DC18 for $399 but Target wants $469 and on eBay you can get it for under $350. Lot of difference there!

Oceanna, I got a Tuesday Morning flyer in the mail yesterday and starting May 6, they will have the Dyson DC-15 "The Ball" on sale for $399.99. Not sure if your interested in this model or not but wanted you to know. BTW, we have the purple "animal" version and love it! We purchased for the new house because the old one had central vac and this one does not.

Another vote for Dyson. We have animal, but rarely use animal attachment. My wife loves it. I am really scared what will happened if Dyson breaks.

I really could not care less how thick pipes are on Kirby, they not consumer friendly... We hate bags, it is very heavy, does not do any better job than Dyson. Prior to Dyson we bought two vaccs from ConsumerReport. No thanks, I will not listen to CR again. Oh yeah, we sold both of them at garage sale.

We have a Dyson grey and yellow vacuum...I don't know the name or model but its performance is mediocre. Customer service is excellent, though, because a piece broke off and one call to the 800 number resulted in a free replacement piece. For real cleaning, I still like the Rainbow...the entire house feels different when it is used.

I have a Dyson Animal DC14, and I adore it! When my husband and I bought our first house, I insisted that I have a real vacuum instead of the cheap rechargeable stick vacuum we had for our apartments. We have a cat, and the ease at which the Dyson grabs the hair is incredible. A few quick swipes with the turbo attachment and the chairs are clean again.

I'm asthmatic, so I was a bit concerned about the canister. However, I've found that if I'm careful, it's not a problem. I empty the canister into a plastic grocery bag first, then leave and let it settle, then move the little bag into the real trash. If you wanted to, a mask would probably help too, but I never bother.

The thing that really sold me on the Dyson was cleaning up after the construction of our house. The Dyson sucked up so much construction dust it was shocking. You couldn't see the dust, we knew it was actually UNDER the carpet, but that didn't matter to the vacuum, it got it all with ease. That dust could have been a big problem for my breathing, but it never was thanks to the vacuum.
