Train Rack shelf in Bathroom?

When we moved into this house, I did a bronzing job on an old beige spacesaver and put it over the commode in master bath. It's been great and very useful for extra TP rolls, personal items, and a small stack of extra towels. But I'm tired of the toilet lid hitting the metal, maybe tired of the look, maybe just in the market for something else. Do those of you with Train Racks love them? I really like the Restoration Hardware Vintage, since it has 2 shelves, but wonder if the high price tag is worth it? Thoughts?

Here's the Vintage:

And here's my wall with it's current occupant:

This nook is only as wide as you see here, about 36inches, so the Train Rack would almost fill the space over toilet. I also have a bronze towel hook on the wall to the left of toilet next to shower. We hang the 'shower cleaning towel' on that hook. And the bronze towel bar on window wall exactly opposite toilet holds the 'in use' bath towels. So I am a little concerned that the bronze may not work with a new shiny chrome or nickel train rack?

Red, I have the opposite problem. We have a chrome 4 shelf free standing rack in our upstairs bath. Over time the chrome has rusted from the steam of showers, etc. So from that standpoint, unless you buy the stainless (thus the price), you are going to be in my shoes in a few short years. Also, I agree I'd be concerned about mixing the stainless with the bronze given your bath is painted gold, but I am not by any means a color expert. I am sure someone here will have the right answer for you.

You mention it is the exact dimension as the existing rack. How are you planning to use it, mount it above the toilet or use it freestanding?

I would like to try to refinish my chrome shelf similarly to your existing shelf, which BTW, besides access to the toilet - would work perfectly for me:). Or, you could mail me your old shelf once you've gotten your new one? LOL

Sorry to hijack, but would you share how you finished your current rack? I have been talking about re-doing ours. Rather than tossing it, I thought I would give it a shot. So instead of talking about it, I think it is time I do something with it.

    TIA

i think i would prefer the train rack shelf over what you currently have and would definitely go with nickel over the chrome...a much warmer color. silverish/nickel color is easy to incorporate in the bathroom too if you want to repeat abit more of that color...in accessories, plant pots, candle holders, soap dishes, etc, etc, etc. i think if you add a couple of similar colored accessories, it could look really nice!

Thanks, WIP. I've linked the picturetrail site where I put my long-ago instructions. You may have to brush off your rust first and use rustoleom paint as a base. But it's not an expensive project and it could make your old shelf look new.
I recommend the new Rustoleum spray paint, Ultra Cover 2X, got mine at Home Depot. The sprayer works very well and I had almost no dripping or overspray.
I guess I could get a chrome towel hook to match the train rack if I buy it, or maybe get the train rack in bronze, I saw one on Ebay. I would mount the rack on the wall. And it's a few inches narrower than the wall distance. I am just appalled at the price, you know?

I have a train rack shelf (one shelf) in my bathroom that I bought from Bed Bath and Beyond for $25.00 and it looks fabulous. They may have one with two shelf's and you can bet it doesn't cost $200.00 or more. Check out BB&B before you buy the RH one. I fell in love like you did with the RH but the price was a little too stiff I thought.

Thanks for the link Red. I think I can do that? LOL

Sort of totally OT but regarding the chrome, if it means anything, I can see how it would rust or flake off. I have that problem w/ my chrome tires on my van. Flakes off and I start to get flats. I have to have the rims cleaned on a regular basis. The tire guy said that's common w/ chrome tires. I never thought of that applying to chrome finished household items though.

ttodd - Yep, the chrome shelf in our upstairs bath has rusted in spots and I am reasonably sure it was caused by the humidity from using the shower daily.

I've not used chrome in any other household application, so I am not sure how it would hold up in a totally dry setting. It may be fine? I definitely would not use it in the bathroom again.

FWIW, I really like what you have now and maybe there would be a way to put something under the legs to raise it high enough that the tank lid doesn't hit?

I also think you may trade in hitting the lid for hitting the head with that new one, unless you mount it quite high. It looks to have more depth from the wall, right about to where you might lean into it as you bend over to flush? My head hurts just looking at it :-)

I also think silver tones would not work as well with your paint colour.

Karin, that's what my DH said........particularly when he saw the price of the RH rack. I think the old spacesaver cost me about $18 at a thrift shop and the paint stuff I had on hand several years ago.
He's going to look it over.

What if you cut the legs off your spacesaver and attach it to the wall so that the bottom shelf is higher than it is now? No more toilet seat hitting the metal, and the finishes would still match. Of course, this idea wouldn't solve the dilemma of wanting something new.
