Sand Bottom Pool

Has anyone ever heard of a backyard pool with a beach-style entrance and sand bottom? Just curious if it can be done.

Thanks!!

I saw a pic of one in a pool book I have ("Tauton Home Pool Idea Book" from Lowe's). It looked like a privately owned pool, not a big hotel-pool. If you go to Google Images and search for "sand bottom pool", it will pull up several pics.

The only one I have ever seen is at Disney's Yacht club in Orlando. Its a really neat pool and somehow they manage to keep it very clean. I have no idea how they clean it but if you put on a mask you will see just sand on the bottom (no leaves, paper parts, etc). They must have some way to filter the sand.

With enough money I am sure you can have one, but you better make sure it has the same cleaning system that the rat has. Otherwise I could see it turning to a cesspool of rotting leaves, bugs, animal waste and just about anything that blows in the wind.

We had one at our apartment. The sand starts back about 20 feet from the water to give you a nice beach and then goes into the pool about 10 feet to a grate where the sand falls in; the other side of the grate is just plain plaster, angled down toward the grate so the escaped sand falls back into the grate. It then get recycled back into the beach area via pressure tubes. Pretty cool setup, but it would be VERY expensive to do.

Yeah, the one at Disney's Yacht & Beach club is AWESOME. I doubt that there is any practical way to do it in a home pool, since most pools have a main drain on the bottom.

The beach style entry can be done, if you have a large enough entry area - it does add a bit of length to your pool.

I've seen one here in Vegas, multimillion dollar home. It had sand beach area and the sand entry went into the pool. I don't know if it was total sand bottom, but I can tell you that pool has a huge real rock waterfall with a room built behind to house all the equipment. The room was at least 12 x 12 and filled with machines, and the pool was not huge, maybe 20 x 30 water surface. So if you have the $, I'm sure it can be done. Barb
