Properly tiling a pool is expensive. It requires many layers of waterproofing.

If you can afford it go for it. It's a beautiful look.

The average glass tile pool cost $175.00 a square foot.

What do you mean by many layers of waterproofing? I'm going to ask something dumb... Pools already have tile so why can't we just tile over the rest of it where there is no tile?

Trust me, Im not one of the $20/sf builders, but $175 is outrageous. Even with an oceanside or lightstreams tile, that is just ludicrous.

An average Oceanside glass tile is $45.00 to $85.00 a square foot. Chip out, waterproofing, brown coat, more waterproofing, tent rentals etc. and labor it's getting close to that $175.00.
Even a moderately price light streams is still $30.00 to $35.00.

Another dumb question...why would we need tents?

So it sounds like we should just replace the tile we have and replaster. The tile sounds far to complicated and expensive. Since we just built another pool at our vacation home and the tanning bed is 100% tile we thought it would be easy but of course they were building a new pool. Tile was done first and then plastering the deeper part of the pool. Thanks

If you do glass tile the tents over the pool keep temperature variations down.
If you do it in the winter you would need to tent and heat the area around the pool to keep it the same temperature throughout the day and night. Glass tile can be affected by temperature changes.

Ahhhhh. Yes, I do recall when we decided to tile the tanning area in our other pool that we could only do so because we do not live in a freeze area. We are in South (very South) TX. Thank you for your advise.
