That sounds like something she had rigged just for her. I know there are hand-quilting frames that can be folded up against a wall when not in use.

You could try Googling "hand quilting frames" or check out Hinterberg and Grace websites.

Thanks for your input, Donna. I did as you suggested and found an article that mentioned quilt frames being rigged up as such to get it out of the way when that particular space was needed. Guess I'll have to get my husband busy and see what he comes up with.

Sounds like it was on a pulley system. Most of those were home made deals. The idea was that to save time and space one would simply pull on the rope(s) when one was done quilting for the day/night and the quilt, still on the frame would sit up near the ceiling till the person working on it had time again to work on it. Then they'd undo the rope and down would come the quilt in the frame ready to go.

Ah memories. I too, played under my Grammie's quilts while she and her friends quilted away. And it too was lifted to the ceiling.

I've read several books documenting the history of quilting in America, and in several cases stories from the 19th century that mentioned the quilt frame being lowered from the ceiling in people's homes. I really appreciate the picture in the previous post. I, too, love handquilting and have a Grace Company frame that can be easily folded and stored, with the quilt on it! I have the EZ3 model. It doesn't take up lots of room either. Hope this helps.
