some people get irritation from ipe dust. fortunately, I don't. Ipe has the compound lapachol (and many others)...it's a yellowish dust when you cut it. It's being tested as a possible cure for cancer. that said, Ipe may or may not be harmful to horses. I have a dog, and he spends alot of time in my shop. I cut alot of ipe there, and have pieces all over the shop.

I cant see installed ipe giving off anything thats going to hurt anything,including those Ponys. J

As Steve states ipe has been used against cancer for many years. The bark of the tree is actually what is used and made into a tree. I really don't know if it works, but a lot of people believe in this. The sawdust is real irritating but that does not mean it will do any damage to you. I have the stuff all over my house, ceiling beams, windows, doors, etc. and I really am not worried about it. The good thing is that termites don't come close.

I save as much of the sawdust as I can and keep it in a container. Mixed with epoxy or a good grade of wood glue, it makes an exellent wood filler.

If you think ipe dust is irritating, wait till you try sawing, filing or drilling bakelite.
