Ikea Lidingo Cabinet Doors are peeling

Has anyone else had this problem with the Lidingo doors? If so, what did you do about it? The paint is cracked and peeling along the top edge of the cabinet doors.

These cabinets were installed in August 2006 by an Ikea certified kitchen installer. I noticed the damage to the paint a few months ago and filed a customer service claim with Ikea in Jan 2008. When I took the doors into the Ikea store for examination, I was told that I could "return" the doors and they would give me 30% of my purchase price back, or they could give me the exact same doors as a replacement. I asked for the replacement, but none are being fabricated or are in the warehouse, so they can't place an order. (Ikea has a strange and convoluted way of ordering kitchen items that are not in the warehouse.) I was directed to call the main customer service line every 2 weeks until these doors are available, and then come back and place the order.

These cabinet doors are from the sink base cabinet, and I expected that Ikea would blame it on water damage, which they did. If water is what caused it, then it takes very little water to damage these doors. Kitchen and bathroom cabinets should be able to handle incidental drops of water for many years without sustaining damage.

So now I wonder what I should do. The options that I can think of are:

a) Jump through the Ikea hoops to get replacement Lidingo doors and wonder if they will also crack and peel in 1.5 years.

b) Choose some different Ikea doors for the sink base, maybe one of the white foil doors instead of painted doors, or the stainless steel door. Maybe these would last longer.

c) Buy similar white doors from another cabinet maker. I have had white thermofoil cabinets by Diamond in one bathroom for 6 years, and they still look like new.

d) Repair or repaint the Lidingo doors that I have. Could I add a moisture barrier of some kind?

Has anyone else had this experience? I would appreciate any suggestions. I really like my kitchen and the Ikea cabinets, but this issue has disapppointed me. I would like to resolve it and forget about it for 20 years or so!

Hi Katrina,

I have heard several reports of Lidingo doors peeling. I believe it is a defect in the way they are finished, and it should be covered under warranty.

Go back to IKEA and ask to speak with the Kitchen After-Sales Expediter. They should be able to get the door shipped to you as a replacement rather than having to call every two weeks. In the meantime, check out the As-Is room and see if you can find a returned door that will work until you get your replacement door. I imagine the reason they aren't available is because they are being re-engineered to fix this problem.

YES I have had the exact same problem.

They even accused me of using chemicals on my cabinets. I would not advise anyone to get cabinets from IKEA. They denied my warranty , stating water damage!

They are so awful unprofessional showed lack of concern with a customer after the deal is completed. Good Luck because they don't call back or communicate.

I was rather surprised because I thought they were a great company. BUT when you contact them about an issue be ready to do the leg work and initiate all the calls!

They are a complete disappointment!

We ordered cabinet doors from Swedish doors in Canada. we had to replace a drawer and a front for the trash cabinet slide out. Yes, they do peel. We have had ours for ten years now. Kitchens should probably be replaced every 15-20 years unless you bought extremely expensive real wood cabinets.
