dining table rug size issue

We just remodeled the kitchen and replaced the no wax vinyl floor with hardwood. We have an area at one end of the kitchen by the windows where we have a 42 inch glass round table and 4 chairs. The decorator recommened the round table and also a 5'6" or 6' colorful round rug to go under it. the problem is that the chairs don't fit on the rug when they are moved away from the table. We tried a 7' rug and it is better for the chairs but is just too large for the space. We also looked into rectangular rugs but none will fix the problem. I'm pretty sure that chairs coming of the rug is a decorating "no no" so I'm about ready to give up the idea of the rug and just let the table & chairs sit on the hardwood floor (although I really prefer the rug and its added color). What protection should I use on the bottom of the chair & table legs so I don't ruin my hardwood floor? Any suggestions would be appreciated!
