Ceiling lights in bedrooms

Help! We are renovating an early 1900s Arts & Crafts-inspired house, and in each of the kids bedrooms there will be an overhead light fixture. We're not going completely Arts & Crafts with everything (especially upstairs) so I'm not particularly concerned with needing light fixtures to match, but I'm clueless on what type of overhead lights to put in their rooms. We don't need/want ceiling fans, so that's not an option, and most pictures I see of overhead lights in older homes have very ornate fixtures, which aren't either our style or appropriate for young kids' rooms. It doesn't need to be anything "kiddy", but a full on crystal chandelier probably won't work either. ;-)

What have you all done in similar situations? 2 of the rooms are boys' rooms as well, so that is another consideration. Thanks for any ideas you might have!

What about just something really plain? Have you tried walking around lowes to see what they have??

I hate to be the 'fly in the ointment' but we have friends whose little boy was suppose to be down for a nap
and he began to entertain himself by throwing a ball up and down, as he lay on the floor under the light. The
awful thing happened, and the ball hit the light, breaking it and sending glass shattering down and one piece
sliced right through his cornea and pupil!

To this day (he's in his late 30's now) his eye has a look of having been sliced--pupil and cornea does not
line up in his light blue eye.

So, with that said--I've never heard of it happening again, but I would never consider an overhead light in a
child's room because of knowing it has happened.

But--I agree with 'aleighjc', that you could look at Lowe's or Home Depot for ideas!!

Don't do anything that is close to the ceiling but has an open bowl. My nieces and nephews used to throw things up into it. Something enclosed and "close-to-ceiling" is the lowest maintence.

I grew up with lights close to the ceiling with open bowls and glass, and never heard any horror stories about them until this thread. I agree with others, try walking your local hardware stores, and/or lighting stores and see what rings your chimes. You might also want to look at the bedrooms and kids bedrooms threads in our gallery. I think the latter is on page 2 now.

Perhaps something like this would be suitable, and fit in with the style of your home.

Here is a link that might be useful: Arts & Crafts flush mount

It's possible to get plastic globes. Maybe try IKEA--they have lots of non-glass fixtures, if I remember correctly. If you choose carefully, a modern fixture can go quite well with an Arts & Crafts interior.

arts and crafts lights can be very beautiful or very simple..such as the square ones with metal frames and glass inserts..personally i love chandeliers..but things flipping around in the air..like sheets and blankets can hit them..esp in kids rooms..check out some stained glass ones??

Definitely something enclosed. My story...our house had wood plank ceilings. The girls said there was a funny smell in their room and indeed it smelled like electrical wires burning and smoke. We evacuated the house and called the fire dept.

We had shut off the power to the house and they went in and searched...nothing. They put the power on and yep, the could smell it.

Turned out one of the boys had thrown a pair of underpants up and it got caught on the bulb in the bowl shaped overhead light fixture. The panties were burning! The fire dept said that is a very common cause of fires. They see a lot of socks on lightbulbs cause fires.

I chose lighting to fit the decorating of each of our girls' rooms and they got to choose their lights (I provided options of course!). The guest room is just a simple semi-flushmount light. Got them all at Lowes for very reasonable prices.

I find more ideas looking online than at HD or Lowe's. Try these two: Bellacor or Rlights.com

    Good luck!

Thanks everyone... the open bowl issue hadn't even occurred to me so I'm awfully glad I asked this question! I guess I also should've mentioned - I love lights and I'm a bit particular. I've had good luck with Lighting Universe, Bellacor and Rejuvenation, but I've never had to pick out an overhead light for a bedroom and my brain just isn't processing. The girl's room isn't as difficult for me - the boys rooms are giving me headaches. Lots of good info here - thanks for all the tips!!
