Finished table runner

This was in my "get 'er done" pile. I took a hand applique class (twice!) at Road to CA and this was the table runner kit for the class. I never mastered hand applique (my stitches are more "Franken-stitches" then invisible!) and this beautiful kit was still in its bag knowing it probably wasn't going to get done by hand, so I made an executive decision to finish this with fusible and machine applique. I pieced the background, layered batting & backing and the "appli-quilted" appliqueing and quilting at the same time. My teacher probably would have fallen out of her chair! I used all the threads in the kit for buttonhole, and just added some freemotion around to finish the quilting.

Quilt soup really has some beautiful fabrics and patterns. I'm just a little hopeless at the hand applique!

    That's really cute!

And in my book 'done' is better than 'anticipated' or perfect... It turned out great regardless of what the instructions said to do.

Nothing wrong with machine applique and fusable in my book.
This turned out very nice and best of all it is done.
I am beginning to wish I had done that with the one that I am doing (12 days of Christmas) as my stitching is not improving much and the patterns are getting harder. LOL

very nice work and who's to know it wasn't meant to be machine appliqued. I am with you on hand applique. Love your pattern.

That's lovely -- perfect for Spring.

Very pretty :-) And just in time for the beginning of spring.

Excellent executive decision! Looks perfect with your rug.
Laughing at visions of your teacher :).

Jeane, I think your table runner is great! It's yours, you paid for it (plus the classes) and your executive decision was the right one for you! Good job!

Your way is the best way. It's just lovely. Next year we'll meet up and maybe make fun of classes together.

That is so pretty. Good decision you made.

    It looks lovely!!!

I'd be on the lookout for the quilt police if I were you .... just kidding! Very pretty - and I'm not very good at (or fond of doing) hand applique either! I like it!

    Charming quilt!

My quilting mentor always says "Done is better than perfect!" And in this case it could not look any cuter if you had done it all by hand. Good job!

Good for you! Sometimes we have to make that executive decision and go with Plan B - and in my book, fusible web and machine applique always trumps hand applique.

    Lovely table runner! Very cottage-style!

I love your table runner! I too have taken a couple of classes for hand applique but just don't care to do it.
    Your table runner is beautiful.

Thanks everyone for your kind words! Definitely finished is better than being in pieces in the bag. And it took one night to do the machine applique (vs. 1+ year not to do hand applique LOL!)

You got me grinning, too. I'd laugh if I hadn't jumped in my own chair a bit--but I didn't fall out! It's a pretty runner, and your free motion looks pretty smooth and graceful. Have you done a lot of free motion?

    Very pretty and good decision.

Petalpasty, I have done some freemotion. I've been practicing on a longarm machine at a LQS and I freemotion on that, and that seems to have helped with my FM on my home machine. I would just do smaller projects and a few baby sized quilts, and was one of those things that suddenly one day after a bit of practice seemed to "not suck". I still have to figure out how to adjust so my bobbin stitches aren't so loose.
