Not in my experience. Grids usually last a long time, up to about 10 years unless they are subjected to extreme conditions for extended periods. This may include excessively long periods between backwashes, calcium build ups not being treated, power washers being used on the grids, too much garden hose pressure used during rinsing off, and a littany of other potential problems. Technician screw ups happen too.

De grids can go many years without cleaning. The only reason to clean them is if there is a quick pressure rise after a backwash cycle or you notice a rise in start up pressure. Usually this is caused by running the filter without DE or not using enought DE after backwashing. You can use up to 40%+ more DE than the required amounts without causing a pressure rise or loss of flow. You will also get a longer filter run. The DE cake you see when you open up a filter is beneficial and should be left alone. Cleaning them for no reason does more damage than good. Keeping a good thick coating of DE on them will extend their life until the manifolds deteriorate and fail.

DE grids will blow out prematurely from too much pressure, happens from clogged skimmers mostly because thats on homeowner to keep pump able to flow…DE filters have to be cleaned out twice a year or more unless you have zero trees and no flowering plants near your pool. ive been servicing filters for years and havent seen one last more than 3-4 years. mainly becaise your pool is most likely gonna go through severe waether at least 5-7 times a year. Debris like live oak tassles and pollen pods clog DE fast. Really depends on where pools located but they make the grids too Flimsy either way. It’s the manufacturers making cheap parts not your pool guy.
