Mixing bedding - matelasse patterns?

Inspired by TheFoxesPad's recent posting of a cottage-style attic bedroom, I've been working on transforming my own attic bedrooms into a similar style. I now have these Waverly curtains hanging at the windows:

This duvet folded at the foot of the bed:

This Pendleton matelasse coverlet on the bed:

I was thrilled to find the coverlet, as it helps carry through the Native American artwork in the room (pottery and Navajo rugs, primarily), but still works well with the more cottagey elements. I have new king-size pillows on order (my current ones being flat as pancakes), and will also be buying standard pillows or European-sized pillows to use in front of the king pillows. I'm having difficulty finding matching Pendleton shams though. Would it look odd to use a matelasse sham in a different pattern? Something like this, perhaps? I'm thinking the patterns are so subtle that it wouldn't matter, and might give the bed more of a "vintage/collected" feel. Thoughts? (I don't know why I feel so stumped when it comes to pulling bedding together, but I always do!)

Thank you! Wonderful idea! These would like nice:

I'll also be looking for throw pillows as accents. Maybe ticking stripes ... still not sure. :-)

Just bought these ecru (standard) shams on eBay ...

I think they'll be perfect. Thanks again, Fun2B!

Happy to help! I think those will look terrific with the pattern in green set.

    Glad you figured it out...
I was going to say that my matelasse shams and coverlet don't match and I don't think that you can tell- honestly.

I love the colors you chose! I want that coverlet!

Instead of ticking for accent pillows, what about checks? I say that because my latest "obsession" is checks. lol But they would look good w/the floral.

If I were to mix patterns, even in matelasse, I would do two things.

    1. not use the same scale. One should be a much large scale pattern than the other
    2. both matelasses would need to be either a curvilinear pattern (eg floral with swirls), or an angular pattern (eg diamond with the navajo). I would not mix curvilinear with angular in this case

    I love matelasse!

The duvet cover is beautiful. where did you get it?

My thought on bedding is that you should do what makes YOU happy, because really, who else is going to see it? I can't remember the last time anyone outside of my immediate family laid eyes on my master bedroom.

At the moment I have a bedskirt in a diamond pattern very similar to those shown above, in gray. And I have a coverlet in what I guess I'd call a "wavy stripe" pattern in a solid gray-lavender color. Shams don't match; I switch between a couple of different florals. Oh, and my rug is another geometric pattern, but solid color. Technically it's probably all wrong, but I love the color combination so I ignore the odd mix of textures!

Thanks very much for your thoughts! I think the larger scale Pendleton (green) matelasse will work nicely with the smaller-scaled diamond pattern on the shams. I'm eager to receive them! I love the idea to mix in checks too. I think that's the direction I'll go (thanks, Oakley!). I picked up a sweet quilted/ruffled floral accent pillow at a friend's yard sale over the weekend, and all I really need are a couple of checked pillows to finish off the bed now. I'm going to look for a red buffalo check!

Birdgardner, thank you! The duvet cover is the "Mia" pattern from Pottery Barn.

I do agree that it's what makes me happy that counts most. Goodness knows my room is already a mishmash of styles (Hopi pottery with Victorian china!), but I love it. So it works. :-)

I think it's going to be a lovely blend/mix, show us the final result if you can !
