steering wheel cover?

Have any of you made a steering wheel cover? It gets so hot here in the summer (even with the window shade) that the steering wheel is hard to handle. Any easy directions for a removeable cover?

Also...does anyone have the magic formula for instant ice that I can keep in my car. LOL

I'm thinking maybe a long skinny rectangle the same measurement as the circumfrence of your wheel plus a little seam allowance. Sew that into a circle then add that really thin baby elastic on both raw edges. The elastic will need to be a lot shorter in order to shrink up the fabric around the wheel...maybe 2/3 - 3/4 the overall size?

Wouldn't be too hard to do a test project with a bit of muslin. Let us know how it works.

Did you know they have these ready made??I have a very nice one on my steering wheel and i know i didn't pay very much for it.Under 5.00.What's really nice about mine also is that i can set my book or cross stitch chart on it while waiting for DGS at school, and it doesn't slide off.

Kathi, where did you get yours? I know I've seen them in the past, but not recently. my Mom bought one years ago at a bazarre, but haven't seen them for sale since.

I guess I should have clarified "removeable" & the design I was looking for. One of those that fits over the entire front of the steering wheel (looks like a circle with a sleeve in back)

I figured I could probably design one myself...but why reinvent the "wheel" if there's something already out there.

OK...I still dont' think I'm being clear enough. This thing is hard to explain. I'm talking about a large circle thing (not a donut to go around the wheel itself), but an actual circle with a sleeve that slips over the top & on that circle you can embroider, quilt, etc as a decoration on the front. This is something that you would remove before driving.

I think I'm just going to have to play around with some measurements & fabric & see what I can come up with. I didn't see any freebie patterns on the web or in the pattern books for this.

Was just hoping to find some extra insulation for my steering wheel since it gets so hot even with the sun shade up. It was 108 today & my battery decided today was the day it would die.

Here is a link to another website that shows the backside. Looks like a large circle with elastic, pretty easy to make!

    Hope this helps. Rebecca

How about using leftover quilt filler to insulate it?

OK....might have to consider making something like the above picture. Still not the picture that's in my head that I remember from years ago...but I'm OK with change!!!
