2 Speed Pump operation with Jandy Controller

Hi,

I have a Jandy Computer controlling a 2 speed pump. I was able to manually start/stop the pump in either of the speeds. However, I had to turn the higher speed off manually to start the pump in lower speed and Vice-versa. The Jandy RS6 Onetouch manual says that I should be able to toggle between the speeds without having to turn the pump off in between. I talked to the PB who installed my equipment. He installed a 2 speed Jandy relay. Now, I can only start the pump in high speed and selecting the low speed toggles it. However, I cannot toggle back to high speed without turning the pump off completely. The same beavior is exhibited from the the RS6 controller mounted outside (In service mode).

Is the equipment hooked up correctly? Starting the pump always in high speed sounds like a good idea butI should be able to toggle from low speed to high as well as I would like to run the pump at high speed during the peak sunlight hours when the Solar Panels can also do their job and switch to low speed in the morning and late afternoon.

    scal- I have a similar setup as you, except I'm using the PDA P8 for control. The aqualink controller has a safety for 2 speed pumps that is enabled via jumper. When enabled, the 2 speed pump will only start in high speed and will run in high speed for the first 2 minutes of operation to ensure pump prime. Once 2 minutes of high speed operation has occurred, the pump will then change to low speed if programmed to do so. However, when the jumper is enabled, hitting low speed after the first 2 minutes will indeed turn off the pump. To avoid this, you must first turn the high speed on while low speed is on. The pump will not change speeds since low speed is on. Then to enable high speed, simply turn low speed off.

    I know this sounds convoluted, but this is how the controller operates when the jumper is enabled. When the jumper is disabled, control is more logical. High speed turns the pump on and off and low speed switches from low to high speed on the fly.

    For the first month of operation, I observed how my filter pump behaves and primes in both low speed and high speed starting. In my case, since the pump is almost at water level, I did not have a problem with priming in low speed so have disabled the safety jumper so that control is more logical.

    Is the jumper same as the 2 speed relay, that is over and above the 6 relays I have in the RS6 system.

    One clarification. When you say" To avoid this, you must first turn the high speed on while low speed is on."

    The High speed is already ON in teh above case. Selecting the low speed toggles the pump to low speed. Turning low speed OFF turns the pump back ON in high speed.

    Also, I am not clear on "When the jumper is disabled, control is more logical. High speed turns the pump on and off and low speed switches from low to high speed on the fly"

    I assume you mean, it switches from high to low.

    Scal  The jumper I refer to is a jumper on the aqualink circuit board itself. This jumper setting tells the control interface chip on the board how to control the 2 speed relay. The jumper is labeled as "2 speed pump" in the installation manual and the location of the jumper is also called out in the installation manual.

    From your original description, the system is configured properly and the "2 speed jumper" has been enabled correctly to control the 2 speed filter pump so that it starts in high speed all the time for the first 2 minutes.

    You originally wanted to know how to switch from low speed to high speed without turning the pump off. It sounds like it is now doing what you wanted based on your latest response "The High speed is already ON in teh above case. Selecting the low speed toggles the pump to low speed. Turning low speed OFF turns the pump back ON in high speed." This is how the Jandy system works and is what I meant by the low speed button switching from low to high speed on the fly. It will also switch from high to low speed on the fly and vice versaÂ.sorry for the confusion.

    Maybe the original problem was due to trying to switch speeds during the initial 2 minutes of pump starting. The system will not allow this to happen if the "2 speed jumper" is enabled on the board. Once the initial 2 minute start period is over, then switching back and forth from high to low is done with the low speed button.

    For your particular need to turn high speed on in the middle of the day, this is pretty straight forward once the Jandy 2 speed control logic above is understood.

    Example, if you want to turn the filter pump on at 10:00 am and run low speed until 1:00pm, then go to high speed from 1:00pm to 3:00 pm, then back to low speed from 3:00pm to 6pm, the program sequence will be:

    Filter pump "ON" at 10:00am and "OFF" at 6:00pm.
    Low Speed Program 1 "ON" at 10:00am and "OFF" at 1:00pm
    Low Speed Program 2 "ON" at 3:00pm and "OFF" at 6:00pm

    This will run the filter pump for 8 hours per day with high speed operation for 2 hours in the middle of the day and low speed operation for 3 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon without shutting the pump off completely when changing speeds. Just remember, the filter pump will always start in high speed for the first 2 minutes so donÂt be alarmed when this happens. After the first 2 minutes, then the pump will behave as desired. This all assumes a comfort level with programming the RS6. Your PB may be able to help with programming if needed or a call to Jandy will certainly help with programming the RS6.

    Sometimes I have to bang the cabinet to get my high speed to work. When I turn on pump, sometimes my low speed only works.

    Karl. Thanks. Sounds like your 2 speed relay needs replaced. The contacts inside the relay begin to stick together instead of separating easily toward the end of the relay's life. Hitting the cabinet helps separate the contacts inside the relay which is located inside the cabinet. Hope this helps.

    Thx a lot. I could see the intermittent closure. I operated it manually several times with the tip of a screw driver hoping to maybe loosten it up. No luck, so i ordered a new one.Thx again

    Karl. You're welcome. Yep. Once those contacts start to stick together there's not much else to do except replace. Great to hear you've found the problem. Fortunately, it's a fairly easy job to replace too.

    When I try and change the speed from high to low the motor sounds like it needs a new capacitor but this is a new motor. Is it just the relay?
