Are you sure it wasn't cream cheese making it creamy?

It could have been cream cheese... it looked like a soft chunky rice/tapioca pudding. Not very appetizing looking at all, really! but it tasted fantastic. Not too sweet -- and the pecans (I think they were broken pecans) gave it a little 'extra something'. :)

I'll bet it was cottage cheese.....I had one like that once.....and for a Jell-o salad...it wasn't bad! LOL!

Bet it is known as "Heavenly Hash". Type this into your search engine and numerous recipes will come up. There are many versions and adaptations of this recipe.

I make this one:
Cottage Cheese Salad
1 small carton cottage cheese
1 8 oz can crushed pineapple
1/2c chopped nuts (opt)
1 small carton Cool Whip
1 3 oz pk lemon jello
Mix all ingredients together except jello. After all is mixed well, fold in DRY jello. Mix well, chill and serve. May also use orange jello and add mandarin oranges.

I don't think that it had cottage cheese in it, because there were no detectable cheese curds. :)

I just searched on Heavenly Hash, and found *many* recipes, each different, but 99% of them contained marshmallows -- and I'm positive it didn't have marshmallow, coconut, or any fruit other than pineapple in it.

Whatever was used to make it "creamy" was more substantial and less sweet than just whipped cream (or dreamwhip/coolwhip)... sour cream or cream cheese sounds right. I'm trying to remember the exact flavor and cream cheese makes more sense all the time because I didn't detect any sourness. Plus, the cream cheese would make it taste like cheesecake, and of course I'd like that. lol!

That 7-up jello salad recipe sounds like it might be it, ginger_st_thomas. Thanks!

Oh I remember my mom making Heavenly Hash when I was a girl.

It was usually something she prepared when her bridge club was coming !

This was my Mother's jello salad. It is great!

1 (3 oz pkg. lime jello
1 (3 oz pkg lemon jello
2 cups boiling water
1 cup Mayonnaise
2 tablesp. prepared horseradish
1 cup well drained crushed pineapple
1/2 cup pecans

In a saucepan dissolve gelatins in boiling water, cool and add
remaining ingredients. With a little mayo, oil mold or glass oblong casserole. Chill until set. Serves 8

This was my grandmother's jello salad. My mom brought it to a family gathering once, and everyone loved it -- even non-jello eaters. It sounds odd but tastes great! I suppose you could beat a partially-set jello to give it that light fluffy texture of the one you tasted.

Lemon Jello Salad

Both layers can be mixed together if preferred.

* 1 large box lemon Jello
* 2 (12-oz.) cans apricot nectar, heated
* 1 (8 oz.) package cream cheese
* 1 small can crushed pineapple, drained
* 1 cup chopped pecans

Heat nectar until hot and mix with Jello. Pour half of this into mold; chill to gel.

To remainder, add cream cheese, pineapple and pecans. After first half sets and last half has begun to congeal, pour over first half to finish setting. Chill until serving time.

NOTE: This recipe fits a 8" or 9" square pan.

I remember a friend's grandmother making a jello that she called "Fanny Salad" -- after reading the other recipes, I'd say it was Heavenly Hash.

jdport: I've never heard of a jello salad made w/ horseradish in it -- and 2 tbs. is quite a lot if it's really hot stuff. That recipe is definitely different! :)

Party_music, last time my mom made the jello salad she snuck in some horseradish. She told us there was a secret ingredient and asked if we could detect it. No one could and we were surprised when she told us what it was. It was not hot at all and really undetectable except for a hint of something in it. But the salad was as good as ever! :-)

Party_music--Your jello salad recipe may have been one using buttermilk (you'd never guess by the taste). These are really easy to prepare and are quite tasty (my favorite is peach!). We have a local restaurant that serves them as part of lunch each Sunday & folks love them.

joyjoy45: you don't know HOW tacky! It's BF's SIL, and I've given her some of my old family recipes!!! She's NEVER given me a single recipe that I've asked for! :( [I also asked her for the recipe for her Linzer cookies. All she'd say is that she got it from a magazine!] poo-poo! :(

Party_music - When you say she wouldn't give you the recipe, do you mean that she outright refused? I've asked for things from a couple of people who just seem to forget every time. If that's the case, maybe saying something like "Oh about that recipe again, would you mind sharing it?". Or, ask her to pull out her recipe file and you'll be glad to search for it yourself. That wouldn't offend me a bit if someone asked for that. Maybe she's just too lazy or forgetful to look.

Roselin 32: I just had the one with orange jello and mandarin oranges at a work potluck. It was soooo good, I could not stop eating it. And so simple to make.

I never could understand why some people refuse to give you their recipes.
