How about a round or oval rug. I tried many rectangular ones and could never find the right one until I put a large oval rug and it looks perfect. Sorry I don't have a picture handy.

It't pretty normal to leave a border bare all around the area. Most area rugs come in basic sizes, it won't be easy to find something pre-made in an unusual size. You could also get a piece of carpet (maybe wool?) cut to size and serged or even fringed. My foyer is L shaped, with the long part of the L being about 7.5x12, with a 6x9 Karastan rug.

mlraff--how much of a border do you have at each end? I didn't think about oval...isn't my space too long and narrow?

sue36--does your rug come pretty close to the front door? If you get a piece of carpet cut to size, do you use the same as your regular carpet, or do you pick out something different?

Best possible place to check for carpet runners is EBay. Look under Antiques -- then Rugs & Carpets -- and simply type in your size requirements. Quite amazing selection!
