Ordinarily, they should line up, the same way that the cushions on a sofa, or multiple curtain patterns, or jacket fronts and sleeves, do.
Unfortunately, big production products often just continue to cut along the bolt by measurement, not pattern, because they don't waste the fabric they'd have to cut off to make the repeats hit the same place on all the shams.
But with a big, loose pattern like that one, sometimes it looks nice to have the pattern continue across the two shams, rather than have the same repeat on the front of each. It sounds like yours don't do either.
Call customer service and see what they can do for you, or if it's available in the store, and you can, go to the store and make them drag out a bunch of them so you can pick two you like. If they can't get you two that match or line up, and you don't like how it looks, you might choose a coordinating stripe, or a solid with a contrasting flange, for the shams.

If the shams' pattern matches even a portion of the duvet--same background color?--then I'm betting that PB would say everything matches.

Are they off when it comes to the color itself? Like is the duvet's background light blue and the shams' more gray? That's different.

I think it'd be pretty much impossible to get the shams to match each other exactly, especially with that pattern (in the world of quilting, doing that requires "fussy cutting"--a lot of waste in doing so, as Bronwynsmom says), so I really don't think that today manufacturers do that. I have mostly solid shams, but the 2 I have that are part of a set--which look like a tropical/island block quilt--are not the same pattern. Same colors, same size blocks, but in a different arrangement.

But I've always put the shams in back of the regular pillows, so whose really going to notice? (unless you don't have regular pillows showing on the bed?)

I am not surprised that the pattern repeat doesn't match on the shams. It would be to expensive for the company to waste the fabric. I too usually have my shams as the very last layer on my bed-with pillows in front, so just the tops really show. If you aren't using them that way, or if it really bothers you, try and call pottery barn.

Thanks everyone. The background colors all match. It's just a jarring combination with the way the large pattern falls on each. I am using them with three striped silk pillows I already had, so I have my actual sleeping pillows at the very back, then the three striped pillows and I place the shams at the front with a small pillow.

I called Pottery Barn and they told me that the pattern would vary by no more than an inch vertically. I explained that one of the ones I received had the large cream rose and orangey tulip in the lower right corner and the next one had the large cream rose and tulip (both cut in half) in the upper left corner. Not only did the pattern not continue across the shams or match from sham to sham put the pattern was the worst possible combination. They told me to go to my local store and just pick some out that are better suited. I explained that the closest store was an hour away and that I had already called that store before placing the order last month and they didn't stock this set.

They agreed to send me two more so that I could pick the best two. Unfortunately, it is on back order again...til the end of next month.

Is it wrong to continue using them until the new ones arrive. Decorative purposes only?

I think they are trying to help, and that sounds like a pretty good compromise to me.
As to your other question, I think you know you shouldn't use them until you've picked the ones you will keep, now, don't you...(picture winky smiley face here)...the next person to receive them will post here and say, "I got two shams from PB and I think somebody has been using them!"

This is interesting...maybe I have been lucky, but I have never had mismatched shams...go figure!!!

I would put them back in the package to protect them until the exchange...but that is just me. :-)

Wow, that's pretty!

Order half a dozen shams, pick the two that look best together....return the others. Your bedding is beautiful and worth the trouble. I just went through the same thing; it bugged me until I ordered more shams so I could choose two that didn't look "off" together.
