How odd! I just can't imagine prim Martha doing this cake, it doesn't seem her style! I'd rather have meatloaf than cake, but I usually don't care for food to look like something else. It looks like a cake you'd give to somebody whose birthday was on April 1.

What a neat and fun idea! I just might try it. My family would get a kick out of it. I would use our own meatloaf recipe but putting it together to look like a cake...pretty cool. NancyLouise

I also think it's cool!....Also would work with ham loaf and mashed sweet potato....served with a dessert of a fried egg ( peach half, surrounded with whipped cream) on toast ( pound cake)..

I like your dessert, Linda! Reminds me of the other day on Food Network, I think it was Sugar Rush, some guy made a huge cake like a fried egg and when you cut into it the "yolk" came out! It was pretty cool!

A really unique idea !!! Sometimes you have a birthday person who is not allowed sweets, or is on a special diet. A novel presentation at a birthday celebration meal.

It's sort of a reverse on the idea of making a real cake that looks like a non-sweet dish (cakes that look like hamburgers for example).

I think it would be a really cute idea for someone who doesn't like or can't eat sweets. Sort of gives the dinner a festive look huh?

As far as an april fool's idea -- actually pretty cute -- as long as you had a real cake waiting in the wings!

Well, don't tell !!! but the concept is going to be dh's birthday dinner tomorrow! Heart shaped meatloaf with garlic mashed potato 'frosting'. Maybe with some carrot stick 'candles'? Maureen

Don't do it. I did. My kids cried all supper long because it wasn't cake, both myself and husband were really grossed out because we couldn't get past the look of what it actually was and then tasting something different. I didn't make meatloaf for almost a year after this incident! Cute to look at, but not to eat.

I made the meatloaf cake last night for dinner along with roasted pepper and tomato soup. The family thought it was a hoot! They loved it! I used my own meatloaf recipe (bbq flavored). The hardest part was removing the meatloaf from the round cake pans. It did split some but I used that as the bottom layer so no one could tell anyway. It wasn't hard to do and was lots of fun. It didn't look as good as Martha's picture...I couldn't find my cake frosting tip so I just sniped the corner of a baggie and filled it with the mashed potatoes and decorated. My family appreciated my efforts to put some fun into dinning. Even the lowly meatloaf can aspire to greater heights! (god I need to get a life! LOL!) NancyLouise

I'm another who is not a fan of "cute" foods, especially something that looks sweet and is actually savory. To each his own :)
