RECIPE: Historic Clove Cake

Usually I lurk. But I thought this quite good and don't remember seeing anything like it. Leaves a nice clove aftertaste too.

A very old recipe, reportedly Teddy Roosevelt's

favorite.

Clove Cake

1 cup margarine

1 1/4 cups sugar

5 egga

2 cups sifted flour

1 Tbsp. cloves

1 Tbsp. cinnamon

pinch salt

1 cup buttermilk

1 Tbsp. baking soda

Preheat oven to 350. Grease 10" tube pan.

Cream margarine & sugar, beat in eggs one at a time.

Sift flour with cloves, cinnamon & salt. Beat in about

a 1/3.

Stir in 1/2 c. buttermilk. Stir in another 1/3 dry ingredients.

Stir bk. soda into remaining buttermilk and stir into batter

along with remaining dry ingredients. Pour into prepared

pan. Bake 45-50 minutes or until cake pulls away from rim

of pan. Cool 10 min. and remove from pan.
