Futons?

Does anyone make futons which are comfortable to sleep on? Bed quality, well made.

    I'm sitting on one, typing.
I guess it says it all that there were no suggestions.
Futons are just plain ... futons.
Not great but will do in a pinch.

I know, I've slept on a few...okay for one night. Thought, over the years, they might have made them better. I was hoping for something comfortable for sleeping over an extended period.

Maybe I'll look into Murphy Beds.

I agree with Jane that a Murphy bed may be the way to go for more than a night or two. We have a queen size futon with a 3" foam top (memory touch -- like tempurpedic) It is about as comfortable as a futon gets (and I've slept on lots) but I still wouldn't recommend it for adult guests (kids love it)

Thanks, McMesprit and Freeman. I guess things haven't changed re futons. I have a space issue and Murphy might work if not too expensive.

I had a futon with actual spring construction that I happily slept on for a little over a year (4-5 years ago, in my mid-20s). I got the best one the store had, and when I got a real bed, the futon became the couch/guest bed. After living with a really good quality mattress, though, I doubt I'd want to go back to the futon.

I wonder if any of these convertible sofas are comfortable? They're certainly more attractive than futons.

I don't know, but for the price you should check out ikea for one of their sofas. I think they even make one of their sofa models in a sleeper if you want to pay a little extra.

    We have a great futon.

Got it about 10 years ago, and it is as comfortable as many average beds.

We got the upgrade mattress with the thick mattress.

Got it at a store in kansas city called temple slug. Link to their website is below.

We have two futons with springs in them... I think they're quite comfortable. I don't know what brand they are, I just bought them at our local futon store.

I was initially intending to put a futon in my office, thinking I couldn't afford a pull out sofa bed. I went to Ikea and ended up purchasing the Ektorp sofa bed because the quality seemed much higher than the futons and the comfort level definitely seemed higher as well. The price was very reasonable. We rarely use the bed portion, but it seems relatively comfortable.

I agree that Ikea has some really good and cheap products. Especially their sofa beds which are quite well made and comfy. I really liked my old futon I had back in college too. It held up great for four years. Good on my back too. If you want a comfortable futon, check out the Ikea store if you have one nearby. The bonus is you can fold it up and make it a couch.

Thanks. I slept on a futon during college and it was not a great experience. I don't have an Ikea near me but might try looking at Sleepy's or one of the bed stores. I wonder how it could fold with a regular, spring mattress.

    Thanks for the links,

I bought a futon from Costco. It is made by Bigtreesleep and although it's kind of pricey, my adult daughter loves it when she visits for 2 or 3 days. It is the "Soho" model and it comes w/ a Simmons mattress. It does not come assembled and I had to enlist 2 handymen to put it together. Also, for apartment dwellers such as I, they deliver it only "curbside" and it took a lot of persuasion to get a white glove delivery. If you live in a house, I guess the only problem is having someone strong to bring it inside.

For all you people who think a futon would make a nice guest bed for your aging parents. Forget it!
