Remember, in Australia, a biscuit is your cookie! Three recipes for you to consider.

Date Biscuits
1/2 cup margarine
1/2 cup raw sugar [if you can't get raw sugar, use white sugar and substitute a tablespoon or two of brown sugar - or just use white sugar]
1 egg
grated rind of 2 lemons
1 1/2 cups self raising flour
1 cup flaky bran
2 teaspoons cinnamon
2 cups chopped dates

Combine margarine and sugar, mix in the egg and lemon rind. Stir in the flour, bran, cinnamon and dates. Mix well. Shape into balls and flatten onto a greased oven tray. Bake at 150C for 20-25 minutes.

Variations:
Add 1/2 cup preserved ginger and a few chopped walnuts if desired.

Substitute the flour and bran with 1 cup self raising flour and 1 1/2 cups of oatbran.

Date and Nut Biscuits
125g butter
125g brown sugar
3/4 cup nuts and dates mixed
1 cup self raising flour
1 egg, beaten
1/2 teaspoon vanilla.

Boil together for 5 minutes. When cool, add nuts and dates, flour, egg and vanilla. Mix all together, put into a slab tin and bake 20 minutes. Cut while warm. [A slab tin is like your jelly-roll tin.]

Date and Peanut Specials
90g butter
1 tablespoon peanut butter
125g brown sugar
3/4 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 egg
1 cup roughly chopped dates
1 1/2 cups self raising flour

Cream together the butter, peanut butter, brown sugar, vanilla, and spices. Beat in the egg. Add the dates and mix to a stiff dough with the flour. Put teaspoonfuls onto ungreased oven trays and bake at 200C until tinted, about 12 minutes. If liked, when cold drizzle over with thin lemon icing and decorate with pieces of glace cherries.
