Somewhat major vent!!!

Yesterday my granite (Juparana Arandis) was installed. I am very happy with it. Today my plumber came in to hook everything back up. I got granite in my powder room too. When the guy went to install the faucet in that sink, he said "We have a big problem". The sink is an undermount. When they drilled the holes for the faucet and handles, you can see part of the sink protruding into the handle holes. The plumber said there's a flange that goes under there to make a tight seal and the sink is in the way! So, I called the granite place and they started talking about "u-shims" or "u-spacers". The plumber and his boss who owns the plumbing company told me they'd never heard of them. He said if the guy had just drilled the holes a 1/2 in. further back it would have been fine. I don't like the idea of "shims". It seems like something you do when you've made a mistake. The plumber said he would worry about it wearing over time because of the constant pushing and pulling on the handles. One of the installers is coming back to look at it today. They said they may even be able to chip out the part of the sink that's in the hole that is getting in the way. Sheesh!!!

To top it off, we had put a $50 bill in one of the kitchen drawers that my daughter was saving. My DH saw it was in there yesterday (after he saw it, he put it under something-I don't know why he just didn't take it out. Maybe he felt funny taking it out in front of them because it would have looked like he didn't trust them) They had to remove some of the draweres. Anyway, you can see where this is going. The $50 is now gone! My DH even gave the one installer some beer and the other a bottle of Crown Royal (which the guy said he liked) to thank them for doing such a nice job. I am almost more disheartened about my daughter's stolen $50. Ugh! Sorry so long and I'm sure I'm rambling.

I'm sorry about the mess-up and your daughter's money. Someone posted a similar problem just this week I think and even though it was a fireclay sink, someone did mention that you could grind out the edge of the sink that's in the way. You might search for this thread and see if it's helpful. I would be worried about cracking the sink of course, but depending on the sink, it might be worth the risk.

Ouch! I'm sorry you're in granite hell right now (or is it sink hell? Humm) anyhoo, I have the answer....get the crown royal back!!!

I'm in granite hell and haven't even gotten to the install LOL I just don't know how much worse it could be, but if it helps you...all these posts with problems do help me out a bit so I know what to watch for!

Worst case (and I'm not sure it's not the best case) tell the idiot to give you new graite for that counter...it's their error. I'd not wait for it to develop problems later...(shims etc). Because if you wait...nothing will happen when you make the call!

    cind11,
It was me that had a similar problem as yours, but our sink was not showing in the hole--just very close--and the plumber could not tighten the faucet. I have ordered an extension for the faucet, and I think I am going to have a small piece of the countertop fixed to go underneath the counter with the hole drilled in it. I have not received the extension yet, so I do not know if this will work. The installers (ours is Silestone) said they had never had this problem before. Our sink also was undermounted; however, it had the lip on it so that it could be dropped in. Like you, just another 1/2 inch farther back would have taken care of this problem. I hope your problem is taken care of successfully.

Cind: I am in granite hell as well - I can't offer you any advise, but I offer you my sympathy and you're not alone! Good luck - let us know what you decide. I think you should call the owner of the plumbing company about the $50 as well! That reeks!

Thanks for all the sympathy. As it turns out, one of the granite installers came back today. He ended up grinding down the part of the sink that was sticking out into the hole. It made rather a mess (white dust) in my bathroom, but it looks like the plumber should now be able to install the faucet. My cabinet guy was at my house today (didn't get new cabinets but he has to make some trim for me) and he said "Granite guys do that all the time." (as in not drill the holes back far enough) So, the moral of the story is "Check your holes". Ha Ha.

I called the saleswoman I dealt with at the granite place today and told her about the $50. I told her she could do with that info what she wished. I just wanted to make her aware of it. I have a strong feeling that it wasn't the granite installer who came back today. I think it was the "twenty something" kid who wasn't very talkative and did the job with him.

Igloochic, yes I want my alcohol back! I'm going to tell my DH that next time no one gets a "tip".

Jayjay teacher, isn't it always "you" who has the problem that has never been seen before? Actually, I think it's me. I hope your extension works. You shouldn't have to deal with that though!

    Cindy,

    That sucks!

Sorry to hear it, but I think it was a good thing to tell the saleswoman about the $50 and to tell her she could do as she wished with the info. That was probably really good Karma for you- lets the niggly sick feeling escape! I had a sort of similar experience (not kitchen related). I was sitting outside at a StarBucks with DH and left my purse on the ground- we changed tables to get in/out of the sun, and started talking to one of my DD's friends who walked by. She then started talking to this young 20ish something guy who was now sitting at our old table, and anyhow, suddenly I realized my purse was missing- we looked everywhere, I went into Starbucks, told the clerks, we walked around forever, (it was a huge shopping mall), and then went back to Starbucks to give our info- my car keys were in there, all my ID, you know the drill, I was sick...
Figured that that '20 something' guy must have taken it and stuffed it into his backpack. But, it had been turned in to Starbucks. I still think to this day, that he saw us talking to "Morgan", and felt guilty and returned it while we were gone searching the parking lot. Maybe, if this saleswoman talks to the granite guys, someone will feel guilty enough that you will get your money back- fingers crossed!

    raehelen,

That's pretty amazing that you got your purse back. I do hope the "kid" feels guilty about it especially after my DH was nice enough to give them gifts. So many people are dishonest these days, it's sad.

Oh well, at least I love my granite!

Personally I would report it to the police. It is a crime and maybe he will get a little intimidated if they question him.

akarinz - report what to the police? that someone found your missing purse and turned it in - it's pure speculation that someone "stole" it and then turned it in...

akarinz - sorry, you were referring to the kid who took the $50 - well, yes, you can report it to the police but unless they acutally saw him take it, nothing will come of it.
