Question for Texashottie

Hi, I am fairly new here, but I saw a glimpse of your dining room in another thread. It looks lovely and I would love to get more information or pics. if you have them. Is it navy or black? Paint or wallpaper? It is gorgeous and I would love to see (and hear) more! Thanks!

Thank you, Kate! What did you want to know? I painted it a flat black last summer. I used ICI paints and I cannot remember the name. But it was the blackest black that was a neutral.

I really enjoy the room, even though I don't have a dining set yet in it, LOL! But thank you for the compliments.

OOPS, sorry I see another post about your dining room. It is beautiful! What was your inspiration for the color?
I would love to see more pics of your home!

Thanks, Java. My inspiration? I like black--it makes a very strong statement but yet it's neutral. I lived in the house for a year before I figured out what color I wanted in there. (And I got a lot of help from people on here!) I think that once I get some furniture in there, it will put the focus more on the pieces than on the wall color itself.

Aside from my DH's study, the whole rest of the house is the same cream color and the mouldings are painted similar. I think it makes a cleaner palette for my furniture---and I have some antique pieces I adore.

This is a Louis XV bed in my guest room that I dressed with a matelasse and duvet in similar tones.

My master bath I used a lot of travertine throughout in the same color as my walls. I do have distressed black furniture-style cabinets in there which create a similar contrast as my DR does.

I haven't shared too many photos of my home. I have a lot of unfinished and unfurnished spaces! ;)

texas - holy cow your house is gorgeous! Love that bed! What is the cream color you used throughout your house?

Thanks, Sheesh! I used SW Irish Cream for all my woodwork and mouldings/wainscoting. The wall color is custom, but not far off from it.

If I recall correctly the cream is Irish Cream by SW.

Texashottie, if memory still serves maybe the DR color is Black Onyx by ICI? Or was that just one of the contenders when you were trying to choose between 2?

Hi Ttodd! Black Onyx sounds very familiar!! But I did buy a few samples, some of them more charcoal than black, and I cannot remember if that was one of them. Sorry!! Whatever it was, it was the blackest neutral. I would have to drive down to the ICI paint store to look it up.

I painted my wainscoating black, in my dining room and also in my living room.

I was inspired by a friend that painted her whole house black with lots of white windows and white moldings. It sounds awful, doesn't it? It was gorgeous and was featured in Southern Living and on HGTV. She is a decorator of course.

The name of the color was Black Onxy, but for the life of me I can't remember the name of the paint company.

Texas Hottie your room looks smashing!

It is all gorgeous even if it is not in a finished state. That bath is FABULOUS!! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing. I am sure that we would all like to see more. There is no ICI paint store locally, but surely I can find a good black. I would like to paint it while my hubby is out of town this weekend and shock him!

Newdawn, would love to see pics if you have any of your black wainscoting! Ha, ha, your friend's home does sound intriguing. I bet it was beautiful. I love black. My MIL was at the tail-end of her trip visiting us last summer when I started painting my room black. I could tell that she didn't like the idea at all and thought I was crazy. LOL! She thought that I should have left it the way it was---cream on cream. It did the room no justice.

Java, I'm here to root you on! Painting is always best done when hubbys are gone--I find that mine starts freaking out and second-guessing what I'm doing. Please post us pictures of your new room!!

Texas Hottie I will post one on here as soon as I figure out how to do this. Duh!

My home is much different than your's. I live in a Victorian Cottage built in 1895. My reason for buying it, however.

I do have one of my dining room on the home galleries under "My favorite Room". It doesn't show much of the black though. It is the one with the black and white tile and white sofa and farm table.

I will post some of my living room which is more modern, when I figure this out.

Ya'll are so computer savvy. lol

I wish I could find the copy of Southern Living that my friend's house is in. It is to die for, oh well. I would have to figure how to put the pic's on. How hard can it be, geez.

OOOOOOh, find pictures please!! I would LOVE to see them. Is Glidden also ICI? I was color matching something on Colorcharts.org and they came up the same numbers! I have 3 little ones and my youngest is 14 months. Her nursery was light light pink and my husband came home to find me painting over the pink with bright turquoise. He was SO MAD, but it turned out okay in the end (except my MIL hates it). Here is a link-sorry it is the only way I know how to post pics. I put it on RMS to see if my MIL was right about how awful she thinks it is. She parades her relatives/friends through and says "just look at this color!".... America has voted and it is not so bad, ha ha.
(the black dining room will be in our new house that we are in now)

Here is a link that might be useful: Ansley's room

    Aqua is the latest color...

Newdawn, I tried looking up your room and I didn't see a thread with that name. I also breezed through the dining room thread. Am I overlooking it? :)

Java, Ansley's room is very pretty! I like the aqua color a lot; there have been some other threads on here with aqua rooms that are just fabulous! RMS is awesome, isn't it?? :)

Yes, Glidden is the "economical" brand of ICI. Have heard varying reviews on that particular product. I used ICI Dulux.

Photo galleries is between forums and ask the experts. Just click on home galleries and then you will see some pictures. Click on "My favorite Room" and my dining room is about the fifth picture, I think.

My walls are the orginal wood and they are 14 feet high so the black really doesn't show all that much in the picture I put on there. But in person it pops. Gosh I hate that expression, it pops. lol

    Lovely bathroom, Texas Hottie!

New Dawn, ohmigosh! I found your picture. I LOVE your house - well what I can see LOL. Love how you've decorated. I can't see the black wainscoating in the picture. I hope you figure out how to post pics here or post more in the gallery, I'd love to see. I love old houses also.

BTW, thanks for pointing the way to the gallery, I didn't even know that was there.

Ooohhh, that gallery!! Your room is very pretty! I love your b&w floors! And how cool is that with the sofa in there? I like that a lot---adds unexpected character. Nice job!!

Btw, did you know we have a gallery for just the home dec forum too? I think you would get more traffic if you posted it in our gallery here. (Sorry if I'm telling you something you already know!)

New Dawn-I found it too, love it! Very classic and the couch ties in so well! Show us more!

texashottie: I'm SO glad you took my advice from that old thread and decided NOT to paint your dining room black. THIS is stunning. Clearly, I am a voice to be heeded. :)

Also? LOVE the bed. Did you find it in Texas? (You do know I'm from Texas, right?)

Finally: Would it be possible for you to share the custom formula for your wall color? :)

Oh thank you Tina and Tex. The quilt in that room that is hanging on the wall is not hung high enough. I have to have that fixed. And have drapes made and change those new chairs for some distressed black old ones.

But the kitchen is enormous and I do like it.

Texas I love your Louis XV bed. Is that old? It's just lovely.

I have a pair of french twin beds (or small beds) upstairs that are suppose to be 150 years old. They just look really new to me and I should have someone look at them that knows their stuff.

At any rate, thanks for the compliments..

newdawn: I just figured out how to access your photos. I can't believe I never even knew about Home Galleries! In any case, beautiful room. Love the door hardware, the floor--and really, really like the idea of a sofa near the dining room table. It all looks so warm and welcoming. :)

OS, you make me laugh! And, NO, I did not know you were a Texan!! (I knew there was a reason I liked you...) What part of you from? (You're more Texan than me; I'm really a Californian incognito.)

I did get the bed in Texas. We're one of the largest importers of European antiques by way of Houston.

I'm not sure what my formula is for my wall color!! It's just a tad darker than the Irish Cream; my builder's painters mixed it for me on the spot. (If you email me, maybe I can help you.)

Newdawn, yes, the bed is old. So you have a pair of twins?? I would kill for French twins!! Are they iron? Would love to see pics!! Gosh, would love to see more pics of your home!

OS - I was right along with you in telling her not to paint it black :) I can't imagine it not being black now that I see how gorgeous it is.

Thank you Kate and Tex and OS for your sweet comments.

No Texas they are not iron, but are pine. I will figure out how to post pictures.

Listen, ya'll have a nice weekend.
