Building Home-Kitchen Layout

I am designing our new home, and would like advice on the kitchen layout. I am worried that there may be too much walking between appliances...

Hi there. The layout looks good, but I have a couple of comments...

You have three entrances from your kitchen, so there's not a lot of room to play with.

I would move the stove/oven to where the fridge is...it give you more wall space for cabinets. I would then put a hutch with a sink where the stove is now and put the fridge on the south wall next to the dishwasher.

Lastly, take the two islands and combine them into one.

These changes should work nicely. If you have it in your budget to do though, you could free up quite a bit of counter space by integrating appliance, such as your stove, into the island. Check with your electrician and plumber though to see how costly it would be!

    Good luck!

Probably too little info to really comment, but:

You are not showing any windows, altho' I suspect there are windows planned. It would help to show some more of the plan, especially the nook, to get a better idea of how the room relates to the rooms around it.

The sink/DW appears to be an island open to the family room. You probably would want the island deeper so the faucet is not right on the edge. Or better yet, the sink/DW might be better in the center island instead of the one closest to FR. As prior poster suggested, combine the two small islands, or at least place them without space between them. You will appreciate the extra space in front of refrig, even if it has french doors.

Is the oven a wall oven or under the counter? If wall oven, you would gain more contiguous work surface, if it were placed at the end of a cabinet run -- perhaps next to your frig. You drew only a tiny amount of upper cabinets, which may mean you are short on storage. At 18-ft x 13-ft, your kitchen is a good size, so you undoubtedly have more options than this starting one.

It does seem like a lot of walking to prepare an average meal. I suggest you post this over in the kitchens forum with measurements marked on your plan(aisle widths, etc.) as well as a picture of the layout of the house as the kitchen pertains to the rest of the home. That will help the layout gurus determine the best layout dependant on traffic patterns, etc.

Right now, I don't like how little landing space there is around your cooktop. Turning the 2 little islands into 1 big one would make meal prep a nightmare of running around the island when you needed to wash veggies or your hands. Placing a prep sink in the island would alleviate that, but I'm not convinced that's the best option.

The kitchen forum is going to want to know how many cooks are there? Kids? Ages? Do you expect them to help? Do you bake often? Start things on the cooktop and finish them in the range? Entertain often?

I was a professional kitchen designer, nationally recognized, for over 20 years. The kitchen layout you have is really very poor. I suggest paying for a designer. I no longer design kitchens, but would suggest finding a true certified kitchen designer. Your kitchen appears to have the potential to be a wonderful kitchen. Do yourself a favor - kitchen design is not for the do it yourselfer. I know this will bring a flurry of naysayers. I have yet to see a non-professional kitchen design without flaws or that could not be significantly improved on. Especially one as complex as yours seems to be. Your current design breaks almost every basic kitchen design rule. I hate to be so negative, but I am trying to keep you from making a somewhat permanent mistake.

May I suggest you post your layout on the kitchen forum? There are some very talented regular posters there that would be sure to have lots of good advice.

I like the pantry, fridge and microwave layout :) I would switch the range and oven locations (sliding the oven closer to the stair doorway) with the baking center on the left of the range. Combining the islands is a good idea...I don't think you'd need to cut through, once the range is on the other wall.

Is it possible to attach the sink island to the range wall? Can you access the family room, through the breakfast nook? Maybe create a deeper sink counter, with an overhang for stools, on the family room side?
